In January, Ryan Reynolds shared a photo on social media of himself, Hugh Jackman, and Pierce Brosnan that immediately set off speculation that the former James Bond had secretly sealed a deal with 20th Century Fox to play Nathan Summers, aka Cable, in Deadpool 2. A couple of weeks later, a new rumor suggested that the three were actually teasing Brosnan's involvement in the upcoming David Leitch flick.
If you were hoping the rumors were true, we’re sorry to report that the Irish actor finally shot them down during a recent appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live. At one point during the late-night talk show, Kimmel showed the viral photo and asked Brosnan whether he had landed the role of Cable. Brosnan’s response:
Not true. Nothing's come my way yet"¦It's completely made up. We were sitting waiting for a plane, the three of us, and the guy said, “Quick. Let's get a photograph. Jump in the middle.” Mr. Reynolds said, “Let's do three wise monkeys.” He put it out there, and it went viral.
Brosnan's comments certainly made it clear that he hadn't received an offer for the Deadpool 2 role. When Kimmel jokingly implies that he might be lying because the studio told him not to spill the beans, the 63-year-old actor claimed that he wasnt lying and would have divulged the truth even if they had asked him not to. Check out the interview clip below!
Brosnan’s name was just one among many linked to the role of Cable following the Deadpool post-credits scene confirmation that the time-traveling mutant would appear in the sequel. Man of Steel star Michael Shannon is reportedly Fox's top choice for the part at the moment.
During a recent interview, David Leitch didn't confirm or deny whether Shannon is the frontrunner, but he did say that he would "make an incredible Cable". The director also confirmed that Brad Pitt was once in contention for the role, but eventually had to bow out due to scheduling conflicts.
