We've known for almost a year that Suicide Squad 2 was in the works. More recently, we learned that David Ayer, who directed the original movie, won't return to take the helm. Instead, Warner Bros. has appointed him to direct Gotham City Sirens, another DC Extended Universe installment.
Earlier this month, one of the Hollywood Bibles shocked us all by breaking a story that suggested that the studio was courting none other than Mel Gibson to direct the Suicide Squad sequel. We weren’t sure how that was even possible, considering the Academy Award winning director’s recent harsh words about superhero movies, especially Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
One day later, Gibson himself confirmed the rumor at a screening of his latest movie, Hacksaw Ridge. He also insisted that it was "kind of a first date". He actually talked a bit more about Suicide Squad 2, but the audio was poor in quality, and we couldn't make out what he was saying.
Entertainment Tonight spoke to Gibson on the Academy Awards red carpet, and asked him to clarify where things stand in regard to helming the upcoming DCEU installment. His response:
I don’t know. I just met some guys about story points. It’s not a done deal or anything. But it’s just fun to shoot the bull, you know, when it comes to stories. I love doing it. And if we can elevate any kind of concept it’s good.
When the interviewer asked whether he’d be ready if it happened, Gibson responded, "Yeah, we’ll see." Check out the interview clip below!
In addition to Mel Gibson’s Suicide Squad update, we have a new behind-the-scenes photo from China Times featuring Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn) and makeup artist Alessandro Bertolazzi. Bertolazzi and his team from the David Ayer flick won the Academy Award for Best Makeup and Hairstyling. The outfit Robbie is wearing in the photo didn't make it to the movie's final cut.
