Maybe this is an understatement, but Mel Gibson has some pretty harsh words as far as superhero movies are concerned. To put it in simple terms, the director says that he isn't interested in this genre. Which explains why he passed on the role of Odin, back when the first Thor film was in production. But this doesn't explain why Robert Downey, Jr. wanted to bring him into the MCU (either as a director or as an actor) when the shared universe was at its beginning.

At the premiere of Hacksaw Ridge in Venice, where the movie received standing ovations, Mel Gibson was asked about his take on superhero movies. Clearly, the Lethal Weapon star didn't hold back when he started by saying that he is baffled:

I look at them and scratch my head. I'm really baffled by it. I think there's a lot of waste, but maybe if I did one of those things with the green screens I'd find out different. I don't know. Maybe they do cost that much. I don't know. It seems to me that you could do it for less. If you're spending outrageous amounts of money, $180 million or more, I don't know how you make it back after the tax man gets you, and after you give half to the exhibitors. (via CBM)

And, of course, Gibson also provided an example - which, by the way, means that he did see this movie in particular: “What did they spend on Batman v Superman that they're admitting to? And it's a piece of shit.”

Mel Gibson continued by saying that he has no interest in superhero movies, because real superheroes don't wear spandex (“Spandex must cost a lot.”).

Do people agree with him? It's hard to say. However, Mel Gibson is definitely right about one thing: superhero movies do cost a lot. Just last year, Disney and Marvel considered Avengers: Age of Ultron a disappointment, even if it made $1.4 billion dollars worldwide, on a budget (without marketing costs) of $250 million.
