Numerous websites have reported that Patty Jenkins will definitely return to direct Wonder Woman 2, but today The Hollywood Reporter contradicted all of them. Gal Gadot signed on for multiple movies, but Jenkins committed to just one film. We could view this as a mistake on the studio’s part, given the fact that Wonder Woman opened to a record $103 million.
This major US debut gives the director leverage in her negotiations with Warner Bros. However, although the sequel may have been greenlighted, and although the star will return, it isn't safe to assume that Patty Jenkins will sit in the director's chair.
Warner Bros. has approached building the DC Extended Universe in a different manner than what fans expected. For example, the first DCEU movie is still waiting for a sequel to enter production.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros. may have underestimated the fans' desire to see a female-driven superhero movie, as well as Patty Jenkins' skills behind the camera for a project of this scope. In response, the studio has planned to follow Wonder Woman with Joss Whedon's Batgirl and Justice League Dark (which has lost its director due to its many delays).
In addition, as far as everybody can understand, the studio is back to square one with The Flash and The Batman appears to be going nowhere fast. The one thing we do know is that Warner Bros. is committed to bringing Batgirl to the big screen.
We’re still waiting to hear something about a new director for Justice League Dark.
