Eternals #1 Trailer Released by Marvel

The Eternals are getting ready to make their return. Marvel has revealed a new trailer for Eternals #1, a new series set to arrive from the publisher this fall. This comes as Disney and Marvel Studios are gearing up to launch a movie franchise centered on the group as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. So the timing is convenient.

Kieron Gillen (The Wicked + The Divine, UNCANNY X-MEN, THOR) and Esad Ribić (SECRET WARS, KING THOR) are behind the new series. We get a look at Ribić’s artwork in the announcement trailer, which is, in a word, epic. Have a look.

“I said if I was ever to do a book again at Marvel, it would have to be something I’ve never done before. This is exactly that. This is me teaming up with literally my favourite artist of the epic, taking one of those lightning-storm Kirby visions and re-making it to be as new as the day it was forged,” Gillen said. “While Esad makes whole worlds on the page, I’m applying all the skills I’ve developed when I was away. It’s a lot. It’s everything. There’s enough scale packed in here that I believe that when you look at the comic, you’ll see the pages slightly bulge. Essentially ‘Eternal’ has to mean ‘never going out of style,’ which means we’re aiming for ‘instant classic.’ Also — fight scenes, horror, human drama, emotions, explosions. Comics!”

The Eternals were created by Jack Kirby. The legendary figure of the comic book world wrote and illustrated the first book featuring the characters. The series debuted in 1976. They were, historically, locked in a war with their counterparts, The Deviants. The Celestials gave both groups of their special powers. The group is relatively obscure in terms of the larger Marvel Comics canon.

As a movie, Eternals is set to be the first new major franchise launched in Phase 4 of the MCU. Chloe Zhao is directing. Originally, the film was supposed to arrive in November but was delayed to next year once Black Widow was pushed back. Angelina Jolie, Bryan Tyree Henry, Lia McHugh, Don Lee, Salma Hayek, Lauren Ridloff, Richard Madden, Gemma Chan, Barry Keoghanand, Kingo and Kit Harrington star.

With the movie coming out next year, it’s no surprise that Marvel is giving the group a larger presence in the comics with this new series.

Eternals #1 hits shelves in November. The movie is set to arrive on February 12, 2021.
