Writer Tom King just dropped something of a bombshell on the DC universe. A baby-sized bombshell. The acclaimed author has revealed that Bruce Wayne and Selina Kyle are having a child. That’s right, Catwoman is pregnant and, unless there’s an unexpectedly big, Jerry Springer-esque twist in the works, it’s Batman’s doing.
The big reveal was made by King on Twitter. With no words, he simply shared an image of Batman and Catwoman overlooking Gotham City, presumably from the upcoming Batman/Catwoman series he’s been working on. Batman is holding Catwoman’s belly and, by the looks of it, she’s pregnant. King simply captioned the photo with a bat emoji and cat emoji. Have a look.
Obviously, this is going to have major implications. Granted, Batman also had a kid with Catwoman, Helena Wayne, who went on to become Huntress. But that has since been retconned in the main DC Comics continuity. Turning Bruce Wayne into a father could present a ton of new conflicts and storylines to explore for years to come.
“Batman and Catwoman is a chance to do what Morrison and Quietly did in Batman and Robin: launch an ambitious, accessible, beautiful, thrilling new series that concludes years of stories and defines what Batman is, can, and will be,” King said when the book was announced. “This will be a comic about what the best Batman comics are always been about, how our greatest hero turns fear into bravery, pain into hope, trauma into love. It’s the story I always wanted to tell, and I’m telling it with the man I consider to be the greatest artist in comics, my brother Clay Mann.”
Batman/Catwoman was originally supposed to debut in January 2020. However, the book was delayed. Though, as Tom King explained on Twitter last year, the delay was for good reason, as artist Clay Mann decided to do the whole book.
“While working on the initial issues of Bat/Cat, Clay Mann and I started to realize we might have something good here, a Mister Miracle or a Vision in the world of Batman, an attempt to do what [Frank Miller] did with [Dark Knight Returns], a defining of the character,” King tweeted. “But to accomplish something that ambitious requires a minimizing of compromises. DKR did not have fill-in artists. So Clay offered to do the whole thing, at 22 pages, but he’d of course need time. When the best artist in comics says ‘let’s do it right,’ you don’t say no. But all that means that Bat/Cat is pushed back a bit, which is why it’s not in the January solicits,” King added. “The first scripts are in; Clay’s drawing them now; they look gorgeous; I, hopefully like you, can’t wait for this one to be out. Thank you all for your patience.”
