The critics savaged Suicide Squad, and most of the fans found it underwhelming, but it introduced a couple of fan-favorite characters who will appear in subsequent films. While some, including Jai Courtney's Captain Boomerang and Jared Leto's Joker, were severely underused, others stole the show.
When Suicide Squad hit the theaters, Warner Bros. announced that they had a couple of spin-offs in development, including Gotham City Sirens, which will focus on Harley Quinn. The studio then announced that a Joker and Harley film was in the works, starring Leto and Margot Robbie.
The latter project is barely in development, so we know nothing about it. However, rumor has it that it will put an end to the relationship between The Joker and Harley and make way for Harley to grow into a proper anti-hero.
While promoting Goodbye Christopher Robin, Robbie added fuel to the rumors when she remarked that the relationship could only end in flames. Add to that the characters’ comic book history and DC Extended Universe backstory, and that’s really the only sane conclusion:
Oh, their love story has to end in flames. It has to. It just wouldn't be right (via Batman News).
The actress said that it wouldn't be right, which is another way of saying that it wouldn't be sane. However, both characters are famous for not being right. So who knows? Maybe Harley and The Joker will go down in flames, at least until the next time they meet, when their romance might be rekindled.
We'll have to wait and see. We don't know when we’ll see the Harley/Joker movie, but we'll definitely see Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn in 2019 or 2020 in Suicide Squad 2. It will most likely be 2020, given Will Smith's busy schedule.
