Are you ready for a DC horror movie? That’s precisely what we’re getting with Clayface. Warner Bros. and DC Studios have released the first teaser trailer for the upcoming movie, which hails from director James Watkins (Speak No Evil). This is unlike anything we’ve seen in the DC Universe before. This is full-blown body horror that doesn’t appear to be pulling any punches. Check it out for yourself.
This is very much just a teaser trailer, but it’s crystal clear that this movie is going to go hard. It introduces us to Tom Rhys Harries as Matt Hagan. He’s one of several men who have taken up the mantle of the Batman villain Clayface in the pages of DC Comics. The trailer makes it clear that this is taking place in Gotham City. The city is dark as ever, it seems.
Here is the synopsis for Clayface.
“Clayface unravels one man’s horrifying descent from rising Hollywood star to revenge-filled monster in a story that explores the loss of one’s identity and humanity, corrosive love, and the dark underbelly of scientific ambition.”
Warner Bros. promises that this will be “a riveting horror thriller.” It should be noted that this movie takes place in the main DC Universe alongside last year’s Superman. This isn’t set in the same universe as Matt Reeves’ The Batman. So this won’t be connected to The Batman Part II, which begins filming soon. Rather, this will seemingly be occupying the same turf as our new Batman, who has yet to be cast in the new DCU.
Horror master Mike Flanagan (Doctor Sleep, Midnight Mass) wrote the script for the movie. Hossein Amini (Drive, Obi-Wan Kenobi) was later brought in to do rewrites. The cast also includes Naomi Ackie (Mickey 17), Max Minghella (The Handmaid’s Tale), Eddie Marsan (Hancock) and David Dencik (No Time to Die).
DC Studios will also release Supergirl in theaters this summer. Beyond that, James Gunn recently began production on Man of Tomorrow, which arrives in summer 2027. On the TV side, the live-action Green Lantern TV show Lanterns will premiere on HBO later this year.
Clayface hits theaters on October 23.
