We are getting more Agatha Harkness in the MCU. As reported by Variety, Marvel Studios is currently developing a WandaVision spin-off series centered on the character. Kathryn Hahn played the part in the Disney+ show, which debuted earlier this year to rave reviews. The plan is to bring Hahn back to portray the witch once more.
Plot details remain firmly under wraps. However, Jac Schaeffer, who served as the head writer on WandaVision, is behind the project. This makes sense, as Schaeffer signed an overall deal with Disney’s 20th Television earlier this year. It would mark the first project to come about as a result of that deal.
The move makes a great deal of sense. Not only was this particular corner of the Marvel Cinematic Universe popular, but Disney+ is becoming a bigger factor in telling these stories. It allows for a character like Agatha to take the spotlight, whereas a movie might not make sense. Schaeffer has also proven to be able to win over critics, as WandaVision was nominated for a ton of Emmys.
Here is the synopsis for WandaVision.
“Marvel Studios’ captivating new series ‘WandaVision,’ which premieres in early 2021 on Disney+. Starring Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany, “WandaVision” marks the first series from Marvel Studios streaming exclusively on Disney+. The series is a blend of classic television and the Marvel Cinematic Universe in which Wanda Maximoff and Vision—two super-powered beings living idealized suburban lives—begin to suspect that everything is not as it seems.”
WandaVision was billed as a one-and-done limited series. This, despite the fact that fan demand for a second season has persisted. Giving Agatha a spin-off may be a means to satiate that demand in a roundabout way. It’s also a win for Hahn, who has been quite busy as of late. She recently finished filming Knives Out 2, and is also set to star in The Comeback Girl as the late Joan Rivers.
Disney+ has an increasingly full slate when it comes to the MCU. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and Loki already aired this year. We also have Hawkeye on the way soon. Other shows in various stages of development include She-Hulk, Ms. Marvel, Moon Knight, Ironheart, Armor Wars, a Wakanda series and Secret Invasion.
There is no word yet on how soon the Agatha series could come together. We’ll be sure to keep you posted as any further details are made available.
WandaVision is now streaming on Disney+.
