Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets (July 21)

While there was a lot of buzz about this movie at last year’s San Diego Comic Con, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets seems to have gone under the radar in the past few months. Is it because one of its stars, Cara Delevingne, was the most disappointing actress in one of the most disappointing movies of 2016?

Or is it because the special effects in the trailer seemed a bit dodgy? I guess it’s both.

The movie has a huge budget – $180 million without the marketing costs. I believe it will be one of 2017’s biggest bombs. And that’s a shame, since there are plenty of aspects that remind me of The Fifth Element, the movie that made Luc Besson an international sensation (even though Leon was way better).

To add to all of these, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets will be released on the same weekend as one very high profile flick: Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk. And I guess everybody knows what happens to movies that enter into direct competition with Nolan’s flicks…
