The three DCEU movies released to date have been hits at the box office, but they still disappointed comic book movie fans. The scripts or the editing of Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and Suicide Squad took the blame. Of course, we can’t forget that Zack Snyder was at the center of it all until Warner Bros. decided to diminish his role in the shared universe.
This being said, there are great hopes that the DCEU will move forward and actually be a rival for the other big comic book movie shared universe (we're not counting Fox, of course). And, based on the titles scheduled for release, there are quite a few hot rumors, most likely spawned by the fans' desire for the movies to get better.
This list is all about the best and hottest rumors concerning the DCEU. So if you believe that a rumor can also be a spoiler, you might want to skip this one.
Special Mention: HBO TV Shows
The collaborations between Marvel and Netflix proved that the small screen can be a great medium for comic book adaptations. And that’s because these shows don't have to subscribe to the same rules that apply to the PG-13 movies. Furthermore, the 13-episode format allows for the creation of more compelling characters - most importantly, I’m talking about the villains.
Back in 2015, there were talks between HBO and Zack Snyder about developing a Watchmen series. Since then, nothing has happened - and we’ve heard nothing. However, given the fact that HBO, Warner Bros., and DC Entertainment share the same corporate umbrella, I think this series will happen sooner rather than later (and, hopefully by then, Zack Snyder will have left the DCEU).
So, as a matter of fact, this is no rumor at all. And I can't wait to see darker DC superheroes coming to life on the same network that gave us Game of Thrones, Westworld, Sopranos, Wire, Oz, and so many others.
Green Lantern Corps Will Feature Multiple Earth-Based Lanterns
This is a rumor as old as the movie's announcement - while Hal Jordan will be the main Green Lantern in the Green Lantern Corps movie, two other human Lanterns, John Stewart and Kyle Rayner, will join him.
According to this rumor, Hal Jordan will be in his late 40's (Matt Damon’s name was mentioned rather than a specific age - guess why, if you want to), further distancing the Green Lantern Corps flick from the Ryan Reynolds movie. We can also assume that Hal Jordan will be at the end of his career as a Lantern, and will most likely be replaced by Guy Gardner in the sequels.
Of course, this is just a rumor, like any other on this list. And it may not make sense - if there are so many Earth-based Lanterns, how come nobody knows of their existence? Why didn't these Lanterns come to aid Superman back when Zod wanted to kill the entire human population in order to make a new Krypton? And there are quite a few questions to follow.
If the rumor turns out to be true, I hope these questions are addressed.
Under the Hood"¦In Arkham
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad featured quite a few Easter Eggs concerning Batman's past. In this case, it was revealed that the Robin suit belonged to the now-deceased Jason Todd. Furthermore, the Joker was aided by Harley Quinn when he killed the Dark Knight's sidekick.
So, naturally, everybody assumed that the first Batman flick would adapt the awesome story line Under the Hood, which sees Jason Todd coming back to life and taking revenge on the villains who killed him, as well as on his former mentor.
However, it was revealed afterward that The Batman will feature a host of villains from the hero's rogues gallery. Then another rumor appeared, saying that the action will take place almost entirely in Arkham. So now it’s believed that Under the Hood will be adapted in The Batman flick, but with an Arkham Games twist.
Deathstroke will be in it, as well - so Ben Affleck’s script has to tie up quite a few loose ends. Hopefully, he will deliver.
Hal Jordan Will Cameo in Justice League
Zack Snyder has said on multiple occasions that there will be no Green Lantern in the upcoming Justice League flick. After all, the first Aquaman poster did read Unite the Seven. And it can't mean just Unite the Seven Seas under Atlantis, can it?
It makes sense to have a Green Lantern in Justice League, since he is one of the founders of the New 52 superhero team (the DCEU is, apparently, based on it). And having to wait until 2020 (when Green Lantern Corps is released) or 2019 (when the second Justice League is released) seems like too long to wait.
So Hal Jordan has to appear when Apokolips' armies arrive this year, right? After all, he is rumored to be the most experienced Earth-based Lantern, right? Who knows, maybe Zack Snyder will make a last minute change (as he did with the Flash cameo in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice) and introduce the superhero, thus truly forming the Justice League.
And there is also this pic - as some say, Green Lantern is in the official teaser poster for Justice League.
The Flash and the Rogues
Since The Flash has lost director Rick Famuyiwa, it seems unlikely that the movie will make its March 2018 deadline. After all, there’s been no word that Warner Bros. has found a new director, and it would make sense for the shooting to begin in the following months.
The rumor is that Barry Allen will face the Rogues in his first solo outing. And that’s because they are many and they are his most well-known foes. Also, Jai Courtney made an awesome Captain Boomerang in Suicide Squad.
So who are the Rogues? They are Boomerang, Captain Cold, Heatwave, Mirror Master, Weather Wizard, The Top, and Pied Piper. So that's a handful - but, given Flash's superpowers, it should be interesting to see how they can pose an actual threat. Who knows? Maybe some evil speedster will join them"¦
I know - the CW series already has evil speedsters as its main antagonists. So what? I'm certain that a difference could be made.
New Director for Justice League 2
One thing can be said about Zack Snyder: His movies are visual masterpieces. Other than that"¦I don't know. He just isn't a great storyteller. And this is why Warner Bros. decided that his DCEU vision wouldn't be successful or wanted.
Furthermore, he was supposed to direct the Justice League sequel (which was postponed in order to make way for the Batman solo flick), but after Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice was released, it was announced that another director would helm the next installment.
Who is that director? Well, two names have come up. The first is George Miller, who surprised everybody with 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road. However, the director didn't say anything about helming a DCEU flick, even if he was once set to direct Justice League: Mortal.
The other rumored name is J. J. Abrams, who breathed new life into the Stark Trek and Star Wars franchises. So he would be the best to steer the DCEU in the right direction. But this is just a rumor"¦
Supergirl for Man of Steel 2
This rumor, which has not been debunked by David S. Goyer, dates back to 2013's Man of Steel. When Clark Kent found the Kryptonian scout ship, he also found four cryogenic pods. While three of them were sealed and had skeletons inside, one of them was opened - was that the pod of Kara Zor-El?
It may have been. As we mentioned, Goyer (who wrote the Man of Steel script) didn't say otherwise (but he also didn't confirm it).
Since Doomsday has already arrived, it makes sense for the Superman mythos to be expanded in the sequel. Of course, this means that he won't be the sole Kryptonian survivor. But that doesn't really matter, does it?
If this happens, maybe one day a Supergirl movie will be announced. After all, the character is popular enough to have her own solo series on the small screen - so wouldn’t people want to see her in movies, as well?
I know I would.
Brainiac for Man of Steel 2
For quite some time, we believed that Brainiac would be the main antagonist in the first Justice League movie. After all, the powerful AI couldn't have missed the Kryptonian signal that brought Zod to Earth. However, despite that, Zack Snyder revealed during Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice that other powers are also at play, only to confirm afterward that Steppenwolf (one of Darkseid's most trusted generals) would face the Justice League.
So now, naturally, Brainiac is rumored to be the main antagonist in Man of Steel 2. The supervillain, who was supposed to be the big baddie in Superman Lives, is long overdue - so maybe all of the Easter Eggs until now won't be for naught.
Zack Snyder said a while ago that Superman will have to face both Brainiac and Metallo farther down the line. Given Brainiac's abilities, it makes sense for him to be the villain in the sequel. At the same time, Supergirl (as another survivor from Krypton) could also be introduced.
Nightwing for The Batman
The last time we saw Dick Grayson was in the Joel Schumacher films - given the quality of those movies, it’s understandable why Nolan decided against using the character. Sure enough, Joseph Gordon-Levitt was Robin John Blake, but that doesn't mean anything at all (especially since his full name was revealed at the end of the movie).
So it’s about time someone used Dick Grayson in a movie. And, according to many, that someone should be Ben Affleck. We shouldn't get Robin, but the other superhero persona of the character, after he left Batman.
This rumor dates back to 2015, when the rumors of an Under the Hood adaptation also appeared. It’s being said that Nightwing will cameo in The Batman, most likely being set up to appear in subsequent films.
Also to be noted: According to the same rumor, Nightwing will appear with Batgirl in the planned Batman flick. So Ben Affleck (who is also the script writer) has to juggle quite a few characters.
Teen Titans Instead of Cyborg
By far, the Cyborg flick is the most surprising movie Warner Bros. has announced. The character then made a cameo in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and a full appearance in the Justice League flick is on its way. Many things have changed since the studio announced its schedule in 2014 - so maybe there won't be a Cyborg flick in 2020.
This rumor began to spread after Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice was released, when the powers that be said that the character was just in testing with audiences. Afterward, when TNT passed on a Titans series, the rumor transformed.
This is an indication that the Cyborg movie won't happen - however, the superhero will appear in a Teen Titans flick, with Nightwing (who is going to have a bigger role than in The Batman, obviously), Raven, Starfire, and Beast Boy.
As far as I’m concerned, a Teen Titans movie with Deathstroke as the main antagonist makes much more sense than a Cyborg movie.
Black Adam Will Appear in Man of Steel 2
This is the hottest DCEU rumor out there, and it was sparked by Dwayne The Rock Johnson, who will bring Black Adam to life. Quite a while ago, the star said that the fans won't have to wait until 2019 for Black Adam’s arrival in Shazam. Then, last Christmas, he posted a pic with Henry Cavill, saying that they met this time as friends.
I have no idea how this could work. But it needs to happen - The Rock is like a magnet for audiences. So this will mean big bucks at the box office. On the other hand, the script also needs to be perfect - and the Rock doesn't really appear in deep and thoughtful movies.
So what do you think? Which DCEU rumor is the best? And which rumor should turn out to be true?
