The Transformers and G.I. Joe crossover movie has just taken a major step forward. The film was officially confirmed by Paramount Pictures earlier this year during CinemaCon in Las Vegas. While much remains mysterious about the project, they are wasting no time getting A-list talent on board. Case in point, Thor star Chris Hemsworth is in talks to join the cast, according to a new report from Variety.
No details regarding Hemsworth’s potential role have been revealed. What’s interesting is that the actor is already part of the Transformers universe. He is currently voicing Optimus Prime in the upcoming animated movie Transformers One. The film is due to hit theaters later this summer. Peter Cullen has voiced Optimus in the live-action films dating back to Michael Bay’s 2007 film. It seems likely that Hemsworth would play a different character, quite possibly someone from the G.I. Joe universe.
Hemsworth is one of the biggest A-list stars in Hollywood right now. Aside from his work as Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, he recently starred in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. Some of his other credits include Netflix’s Extraction films and Men in Black: International. It’s unclear if any of the characters from last year’s Transformers: Rise of the Beasts will return in the upcoming crossover. The odds seem better than not that Anthony Ramos would reprise his role as Noah Diaz.
Here is the synopsis for Transformers One.
“Transformers One is the untold origin story of Optimus Prime and Megatron, better known as sworn enemies, but once were friends bonded like brothers who changed the fate of Cybertron forever.”
Last year’s Rise of the Beasts set up the Transformers and G.I. Joe crossover film. The end of the movie sees Noah being recruited by G.I. Joe, teeing up that both franchises live in the same universe. While the characters have regularly crossed over in the comics, such as the ongoing Energon Universe published by Skybound, this will be the first time they have ever properly crossed over in live-action.
There is no word yet on who will occupy the director’s chair. Steven Caple Jr. directed Rise of the Beasts, but there is no indication that he will return for the crossover. With the casting process underway, a director should be announced before long. Lorenzo Di Bonaventura, Mark Vahradian, Michael Bay, Tom DeSanto, and Don Murphy are on board to produce the film, with Steven Spielberg set as an executive producer.
The Transformers and G.I. Joe crossover movie does not currently have a release date.
