Thor: Love and Thunder Begins Filming This Summer

Fans of Gods and Thunder have reason to celebrate as we now know when Thor: Love and Thunder will begin filming. Director Taika Waititi, who previously helmed Thor: Ragnarok, revealed during a recent interview that the highly-anticipated sequel will be kicking off production in late summer.

“We’ll move down to Sydney around April I think, maybe. Then we’ll start shooting probably around August, I think,” Waititi said during a recent interview with Variety

The plan is to shoot in Australia. However, the country is currently in the middle of one of the worst wildfire disasters in recent history. Whether or not that will affect plans for the Marvel Cinematic Universe sequel remains to be seen, but Waititi did address the situation in the interview.

“I don’t know. I mean, it’s insane what’s happening down there. I just keep reading about it every day. It seems to be getting worse,” Waititi said. “A lot of the smoke has been making its way to New Zealand and melting our glaciers and stuff there. It’s crazy. I’ve got friends down there that are trying to put out fires. New Zealand has been sending over firefighters as well. It’s absolute chaos.”

Thor: Love and Thunder remains a mystery in many ways, but we do know a few key details. For one, Natalie Portman will be making her return to the MCU as Jane Foster. Only this time around, she’s going to become the new Thor. This is a storyline taken directly from Jason Aaron’s beloved run on the character in Marvel Comics. The storyline sees Jane fighting breast cancer before taking up the mantle of Thor.

“I think that’s a really powerful part of the books. I think it’s really cool that she’s fighting this thing and there’s two battles going on. Personally, I really love that storyline.” Portman said in an interview with Variety. “Whether it ends up in the film is yet to be seen… It’s just very rare that these kinds of big entertainment films look at more serious, real-life issues.”

Aside from that, we know Chris Hemsworth will be back as the God of Thunder once more, with Tessa Thompson also returning as Valkyrie. Waititi previously revealed that, in addition to writing and directing, he will be voicing the fan-favorite character Korg again as well. Last, but certainly not least on the casting front, it recently came to light that former Batman himself, Christian Bale, is up for an undisclosed role in the film.

Thor: Love and Thunder is set to hit theaters on November 5, 2021.
