The Boys Spin-Off Vought Rising Is A Gritty Murder Mystery

That’s a wrap on The Boys. The gritty, bloody superhero show ended its run with season 5 on Prime Video. But that doesn’t mean that Amazon is letting this universe die entirely. The company already has another spin-off titled Vought Rising in the works. But what can fans expect from the upcoming prequel?

The Boys showrunner Erik Kripke, who produces the spin-off, recently spoke with The Hollywood Reporter in honor of the show’s series finale. Without giving too much away, he explained what fans can expect from Vought Rising. In short, it’s going to be a gritty murder mystery set in the ‘50s. Here’s what he had to say about it.

“It’s definitely got some Boys‘ DNA in that it’s irreverent and graphic. But it has this sort of lovely, almost noir-like murder mystery — not Black Noir but actual noir. There are detectives and twists, and there’s a murder that then opens up into a bigger conspiracy. We’re also trying to do a very gritty version of the ’50s. Most people’s feeling or sense memory of the ’50s is from movies, which are very sanitized.”

“Even L.A. Confidential, as much as I love it, is visually a pretty clean movie,” Kripke added. “We wanted dirty and grimy. There would be heroin dens and gay bars and this underbelly of popular culture at the time. So to explore all that is a blast, as well.”

Amazon recently canceled the other Boys spin-off Gen V after two seasons. Though Kripke did try his best to save it. That may have made it seem like Amazon was cooling on this universe. Rather, they just felt that there were other avenues to explore. Whether or not any other shows enter development in the coming years remains to be seen.

Eric Kripke and showrunner Paul Grellong had this to say about Vought Rising when it was announced.

“We are excited to bring you the next deranged series from the world of The Boys. It’s a twisted murder mystery about the origins of Vought in the 1950s, the early exploits of Soldier Boy, and the diabolical maneuvers of a Supe known to fans as Stormfront, who was then going by the name Clara Vought. We cannot wait to blow your minds and trouble your souls with this salacious, grisly saga drenched in blood and Compound V.”

The series stars Jensen Ackles (Soldier Boy) and Aya Cash (Stormfront), who will also serve as producers. Kripke, Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, James Weaver, Neal H. Moritz, Pavun Shetty, Ori Marmur, Ken Levin, Jason Netter, Darick Robertson, Phil Sgriccia, Jim Barnes, Mark Winemaker, Michaela Starr and the creator of the comics Garth Ennis also serve as executive producers.

Vought Rising is expected to premiere on Prime Video in 2027.
