Gen V will not be returning for a third season on Prime Video. Amazon decided that the second season of The Boys spin-off will be its last. Be that as it may, Erik Kripke, who heads up the so-called Vought Cinematic Universe (VCU) at Amazon, did his damndest to try and save the show.
In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, The Boys showrunner discussed the spin-off’s cancellation. Gen V season 2 aired on Prime Video in 2025 but that was that. As he explained to the publication, he wasn’t behind the decision to cancel the series. Moreover, he actively tried to save it. Here’s what he had to say about it.
“I did not cancel the show. One, I don’t have the power to do that. Two, I was fighting to keep the show, almost more than anybody else on Earth. So I’m as bummed as everybody else out there.”
Gen V premiered on Prime Video in 2023 and was the first attempt by Amazon to turn The Boys into a full-on cinematic universe. As Kripke said, “these things are based on business decisions that are above my pay grade, among Amazon.” He further explained, “It’s based on amount of viewers versus how expensive the show is to make, and does it make business sense for them, ultimately?” he says. “And, unfortunately, they decided that it didn’t.”
Here is the synopsis for Gen V season 2.
“School is back in session. As the rest of America adjusts to Homelander’s iron fist, back at Godolkin University, the mysterious new Dean preaches a curriculum that promises to make students more powerful than ever. Cate and Sam are celebrated heroes, while Marie, Jordan, and Emma reluctantly return to college, burdened by months of trauma and loss. But parties and classes are hard to care about with war brewing between Humans and Supes, both on and off campus. The gang learns of a secret program that goes back to the founding of Godolkin University that may have larger implications than they realize. And, somehow, Marie is a part of it.”
Kripke further stated that the original plan for Gen V season 3 may still be told elsewhere in the VCU. “We’re still hopeful we can find a way to do it. So, unfortunately, I can’t share it,” he said. Kripke further explained that their focus right now is wrapping up The Boys season 5, which will be the show’s last, as well as the forthcoming prequel, Vought Rising.
“It’s very early days, because we’re focusing on getting Vought Rising out into the world, but Amazon has expressed an interest and they want to hear more potential stories in the world. So we’re internally brainstorming a couple different ideas. We’ll see which ones get traction, but they all have the opportunity to absorb at least some of the Gen V gang, and that’s very much by design.”
Gen V is streaming now on Prime Video.
