DC’s Supergirl Movie Quietly Made An Unexpected Change

Milly Alcock as Supergirl in the Supergirl movie

The Supergirl movie is just a few months away, but a relatively major change was just revealed. The latest entry as part of the new DC Universe at Warner Bros., it sees Milly Alcock take center stage as Kara Zor-El. She made a brief appearance in last year’s Superman but now, it’s her turn to shine. She’ll be doing so backed by a soundtrack from a different composer than we expected.

The official Supergirl movie website reveals that  Claudia Sarne has taken the reins as the composer for the soundtrack. Some of her previous credits include The Book of Eli and The Yogurt Shop Murders. Previously, Junkie XL (aka Tom Holkenborg), who worked on the ever divisive Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, was set as the composer. He took over for Ramin Djawadi (Game of Thrones). So Sarne is the third composer hired.

It’s unclear how long Sarne has been on the job but with the movie coming out in June, it’s interesting to get this news so late in the game. The first Supergirl trailer arrived in December, promising a very different tone compared to Superman. Is it just that Warner Bros. and the creative team felt that Sarne was a better fit? For now it’s totally unclear.

Here is the synopsis for Supergirl.

“When an unexpected and ruthless adversary strikes too close to home, Kara Zor-El, aka Supergirl, reluctantly joins forces with an unlikely companion on an epic, interstellar journey of vengeance and justice.”

Meanwhile, the DC Universe might be in for another big shift. DC Studios ushered in a reboot last year, moving on from the former DCEU. But now, Paramount is set to acquire all of Warner Bros. Netflix previously had a deal in place to buy Warner Bros., but that fell through. Either way, WB and therefore DC, may well have a new owner come this time next year.

The cast also includes Matthias Schoenaerts (The Old Guard), Eve Ridley (The Witcher), David Krumholtz (Oppenheimer), Emily Beecham (Into the Badlands), and Jason Momoa, who is playing the villain Lobo. He previously played Aquaman in the former DCEU, but now he’s going from hero to villain.

Craig Gillespie (Dumb Money, Cruella) is in the director’s chair, working from a script by Ana Nogueira (Teen Titans). Nigel Gostelow, Chantal Nong Vo and Lars P. Winther are on board as executive producers. DC Studios co-heads James Gunn and Peter Safran are also producing.

Gunn has promised that future DCU movies will be in theaters longer than Superman. That movie had its run cut a little short because Peacemaker season 2 was coming out. So don’t expect this one or Clayface to be rushed to VOD or HBO Max.

Supergirl hits theaters on June 26.
