Spawn Movie In Very Active Development, Eying Possible 2025 Release

For years now, Todd McFarlane has been trying to bring Spawn back to the big screen. Despite several speedbumps along the way, it seems the movie may finally have some real traction. This, according to Blumhouse Productions head Jason Blum. The executive has provided an update on the reboot, suggesting that the movie could hit theaters in 2025. He’s not making any promises, but it sounds like they are very much trying to get it made.

Blum spoke to Comicbook.com in honor of the release of Insidious: The Red Door. During the conversation, he was asked about the status of the Spawn movie reboot. The producer explained that they are actively developing the film. What’s more, if all goes well, he expects we’ll see the movie in theaters in a couple of years. Here’s what he had to say about it.

“I would say you have a lot to hope for because it’s in very, very active development. What needs to happen is that my fellow friends the writers and the studios need to figure out their differences and get back to writing, but we’ve got a great group of folks putting it together, and my hope is that that movie – my prediction is maybe we’ll actually see a Spawn movie in ’25. No promises, but that’s my prediction.”

McFarlane, who created the character for Image Comics in 1992, has been trying to get the reboot for many years. He originally cut a deal with Blumhouse in 2018 to produce the film. However, they have hit several roadblocks in the years since. For one, McFarlane originally wanted to write and direct the movie himself. Despite McFarlane’s lack of experience directing, he wanted a certain level of creative control. His vision was to make a lower-budget horror movie, as opposed to a big-budget superhero blockbuster.

When last we heard, Scott Silver (Joker), Malcolm Spellman (The Falcon and the Winter Soldier) and up-and-comer Matt Mixon were hired to pen a new screenplay last year. Unfortunately, the ongoing writers strike in Hollywood has halted work on most projects, Spawn included. Optimistically, once the strike is over, this will become a priority for Blumhouse.

McFarlane has done his part to try and make this an attractive property for studios. In 2021, he launched a full Spawn universe. This includes several spin-offs, including King Spawn and Gunslinger Spawn. In theory, if the first Spawn movie does well, a studio could have a full cinematic universe to play in. But first, McFarlane and Blum need to get this long-gestating project off the ground.

The Spawn reboot does not currently have a release date.
