Paramount Pictures has revealed the first trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog 3. The studio wasted no time in getting the third installment ready to go after the first sequel hit it big in 2022. This time around, they’ve brought some added star-power as well. The film will mark the debut of fan-favorite Shadow the Hedgehog, who was introduced in the video games back in 2001. What’s more, none other than John Wick himself, Keanu Reeves, is voicing the character. Check it out. 

 

 

The trailer leaves much to discuss. We see that Sonic, Tails and Knuckles have settled into a nice dynamic. They’re an odd little family of sorts, helping the world when called upon. They are eventually called upon to stop Shadow once he escapes. It turns out, he’s incredibly powerful. This leads to an uneasy alliance with none other than Doctor Robotnik, once again played by Jim Carrey. It very much looks like the biggest Sonic movie yet. 

 

Jeff Fowler returns to the director’s chair for this one. He helmed Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic the Hedgehog 2, both of which were huge hits at the box office. Specific plot details for the third installment are currently being kept under wraps. Paramount has not released an official synopsis, as of this writing. That suggests some surprises are in store. We do also have a new poster though, which you can check out below. 

 

“It’s going to be this giant, fun, incredible movie that obviously takes a lot from Sonic Adventure 2 and some of the games that I know the core Sonic Team grew up loving,” producer Toby Ascher told GamesRadar+ about Sonic 3 earlier this year. 2001’s Sonic Adventure 2 was the game where Shadow made his debut. Released for the Sega Dreamcast, it has since become a favorite amongst fans of the series. 

 

Paramount has been quick to expand the Sonic universe in recent years. The first film was released in 2020, with the sequel following two years later. They also debuted the spin-off series Knuckles on Paramount+ earlier this year. Knuckles previously made his debut in Sonic 2. It’s unclear at this time if further spin-off shows are being planned by the studio. 

 

The cast also includes a new addition in the form of Jessica Jones star Krysten Ritter, whose role remains a mystery. Natasha Rothwell, Shemar Moore, Tika Sumpter, James Marsden, and Idris Elba round out the ensemble. 

 

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 hits theaters on December 20.
