Marvel’s Thunderbolts movie has brought in a new writer. Originally, when the film was announced, it was revealed that Eric Pearson (Black Widow) had penned the screenplay. Now, however, first-team feature writer Lee Sung Jin will be taking a crack at the script, as reported by Variety.
The outlet recently spoke with Jin about his upcoming Netflix show Beef. It was then confirmed that he is reuniting with director Jake Schreier on Thunderbolts, taking a new pass at the screenplay. Jin had the following to say about it.
“I’m rewriting it. It’s the whole squad again. Jake asked me if I would come on board. I probably should have taken a break, but there’s a lot of themes and exciting things about the movie that I couldn’t help but sign on.”
Little is known about Thunderbolts at this time, but the film was officially announced during Disney’s D23 Expo last year. It will serve as the conclusion of Phase 5 of the MCU, which recently kicked off with Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. Generally speaking, the team in the comics is not dissimilar to DC’s Suicide Squad, focusing on bad guys carrying out missions for the government. Speaking further, Jin talked about what it’s like coming into the MCU on a project like this.
“It’s truly an honor to be part of a Marvel thing, but it is very different. One, it’s not my project, it’s Jake’s. It’s such a large scope and scale that the type of writing is very different. At the same time, the process feels the same, I’m still talking to Jake every day… I think once you find the squad of people you love and trust and are so talented, you do everything you can to keep working with them.”
The cast for the film includes David Harbour (Red Guardian), Hannah John-Kamen (Ghost), Julia Louis-Dreyfus (Valentina Allegra de Fontaine), Sebastian Stan (Winter Soldier), Wyatt Russell (U.S. Agent), Olga Kurylenko (Taskmaster) and Florence Pugh (Yelena Belova). Steven Yeun (The Walking Dead) has also boarded the movie in an undisclosed role. It is also believed that Harrison Ford will appear as our new Thunderbolt Ross. The actor is currently filming Captain America: New World Order, taking over the role from the late William Hurt.
Thunderbolts is set to hit theaters on July 26, 2024.
