A major villain is making their return to the pages of Marvel Comics. This, according to a recent solicitation, as revealed by Previews World, for Captain America #23. While the identity of this foe has yet to be revealed, fans of Steve Rogers should confidently be able to unravel this mystery in a hurry.
Here is the official synopsis for Captain America #23.
“‘All Die Young’ continues! A restoration! A resurrection! A bit of redemption! And the return of Cap’s number one foe!”
Based on that description, it’s hard to imagine Cap’s “number one foe” being anyone but Red Skull. That doesn’t rule out the possibility that we could be in for a bigger, more unexpected surprise, but if Steve Rogers has an arch-nemesis, it is that of Red Skull. The character made his first appearance back in 1941 and has been a mainstay of the Marvel Comics universe ever since. Hugo Weaving brought the villain to live-action for the first time in 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger. Red Skull also returned in both Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.

This will be the latest issue in Ta-Nehisi Coates’ run on the book, which has been going strong for cose to two years since the acclaimed writer took over in 2018. Bob Quinn is handling art for the issue, with the legendary Alex Ross providing the cover art. The issue’s cover has been released, and we’ve included it below for you to check out.
This potentially reveal comes at a somewhat uncertain time. The comic book industry has been thrown for a loop during the coronavirus pandemic. Publishers are cutting back, comic book shops all around the U.S. and most of the world are shut down and Diamond Comic Distributors, easily the biggest distributor in the business, is facing serious issues.
With that, some of Marvel’s ongoing series may be forced to hit the pause button in the near future, at least temporarily.
“My job as a writer is to get into Cap’s head, not to put myself as Ta-Nehisi Coates behind the shield,” Coates said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly when his run on Captain America began. “Steve is not from West Baltimore, Steve did not grow up in the crack era, Steve’s dad was not a Black Panther, so there can be very little use in writing as though that were true. This is a chance to go back in time and envision myself as this kid, subjecting myself to this super-soldier process but remembering deep inside that once I was that weak kid.”
Captain America #23 is set to arrive on July 1.
