2023 is almost upon us, and that means a year full of blockbusters. Naturally, there are going to be quite a few superhero movies in the bunch. But which one are audiences looking forward to the most? According to a new survey from Fandango, it’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Indeed, not just among superhero movies, but among all blockbusters headed our way next year, the finale to James Gunn’s Marvel Cinematic Universe trilogy came out on top.
The list surveyed more than 5,000 moviegoers to determine the results. Marvel took the top three spots, with Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse coming in at number two, while Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania came in at number three. Fandango Managing Director Erik Davis had this to say about it.
“With more than a hundred new releases heading into theaters, fans are excited to see movies back on the big screen where they belong. The new year promises a significant increase of movies that people want to see in theaters, from returning franchises like Indiana Jones, Creed, Hunger Games and Mission Impossible, to highly-anticipated re-imaginings like The Little Mermaid and Haunted Mansion, to off-the-wall entertainment like Cocaine Bear and M3gan. 2023 boasts one of the most exciting movie line-ups in years.”

The full list of the top ten, overall, is dominated by already popular franchises. The only non-sequel/prequel on the list is The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Though that is connected to one of the biggest video game series in history. As for superhero movies overall, The Marvels actually somehow came in above Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom on Fandango’s separate list for those movies. That is odd, given that the sequel to Captain Marvel wasn’t on the top ten overall.

Gunn wrote and directed the sequel, just as he did for the previous two entries. The cast includes Chris Pratt (Star-Lord), Karen Gillan (Nebula), Pom Klementieff (Mantis), Sean Gunn (Kraglin), Zoe Saldana (Gamora), Will Poulter (Adam Warlock), Maria Bakalova (Cosmo) and Chukwudi Iwuji (the High Evolutionary).
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is set to hit theaters on May 5, 2023.
