A new era is upon us, as Star-Lord and the gang prepare for an apocalyptic event dubbed Grootfall. Yes, there is something wrong with Groot, and we’re going to find out what this April. The events will unfold beginning with Guardians of the Galaxy #1, and Marvel comics has just released a trailer for the new series. Check it out.
The new series is written by Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly (Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty) and drawn by artist Kev Walker (Predator). As we can see in the trailer, this is going to have an old school Western vibe to it. It does, however, still take place in the far reaches of space. And one of their allies, Groot, is the big threat at the heart of this new tale. It looks to be action-packed and quite a bit different than what fans may be used to.
Here is the synopsis for Guardians of the Galaxy #1.
“WHO ARE THE GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY? One year ago, the Guardians of the Galaxy were destroyed. Their optimistic future shattered by the betrayal of one of their own. Now they ride the space lanes of a lawless corner of the galaxy, trying to outrun their tragedy. Can they rediscover their heroism and humanity on the bleakest frontier? Can they forgive the failures of their past? Or will they fade into the dark, eternally unforgiven?”
Lanzing had the following to say about it.
“Welcome to a whole new era for the Guardians of the Galaxy, riding like mad through an endless alien dust storm of sun-soaked tragedy, intense violence, and deeply dysfunctional heroes. The optimistic peacekeepers that defeated the reborn Olympian Gods and overcame The Last Annihilation have fallen about as far as they possibly could—and now Peter Quill and what remains of his found family will have to fight like hell in a new western-fueled frontier to find a scrap of forgiveness. After all, the Guardians are a fire—and a fire only ends one way.”
Kelly also had this to add.
“Sharing the reins with us is the amazing Kev Walker, our partner from CAPTAIN AMERICA & THE WINTER SOLDIER SPECIAL #1. His unique blend of realism and wild imagination brings the alien frontier of the Manifold Territories to windswept life like no one else could. Together, we’re guiding the Guardians on a new trail—one that will make them look inwards, even as they face the threats over the next horizon. Grab your element gun, True Believers—it’s time to go for a brand new ride.”
The timing of the book makes a great deal of sense. The first issue will launch just a few weeks before Guardians of the Galaxy. Vol. 3 hit theaters in May. While the story in this new book and James Gunn’s film are not directly tied together, it’s the same characters fans know and love. Admittedly, Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax, Nebula and Mantis are looking quite different here.
Guardians of the Galaxy #1 arrives on April 12.
