10 Great Potential Villains For Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel

Earlier this week at Comic-Con, Brie Larson was officially confirmed as the actress who will take on the role of Carol Danvers, aka Captain Marvel, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Whether or not she appears before she gets her first solo movie – which comes in 2019 and will be the twenty-first MCU offering – remains to be seen, but we’re looking forward to it regardless, given that it will be the first female solo offering in the franchise.

Carol Danvers has had a number of names as a hero in the comic books – Ms. Marvel, Binary and Captain Marvel, for instance – and we think there’s a possibility that elements could potentially be taken from all three for her depiction in the MCU, villains included.

That got us thinking; which villain(s) is Larson’s Danvers likely to go up against in that first solo movie outing for the character? This article will take a look at some of the possibilities. Here are ten great potential villains for Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel.

Moonstone

Let’s kick things off with a female supervillain, as they’ve been severely lacking in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to date. Hela is set to be the main antagonist in Thor: Ragnarok, but having a female superhero face off with a female supervillain would be absolutely awesome – cue Moonstone in the Captain Marvel movie.

She is Karla Sofen – a doctor of psychiatry and psychology whose villainous alter-ego has had some epic battles with Carol Danvers. Her powers (superhuman strength, speed, stamina, reflexes, gravity manipulation, flight, photon blasts, intangibility, light generation, minor molecular control, etc.) are derived from a Kree gravity stone, which could bring her into conflict with Danvers, given that her powers are Kree in origin, too.

A fight between the two would be a real visual treat, and Moonstone’s introduction to the MCU could be a hint towards the formation of a Dark Avengers team under Norman Osborn’s leadership in the future of the franchise.

Now let’s move on to the creepiest villain on this list.

Puppet Master

The Puppet Master, aka Phillip Masters, is a creepy criminal villain whose power involves making puppets out of radioactive clay, then using some sort of psionic ability to control the characters whom the puppets share a likeness with. It might sound like a silly concept, but it could easily be adjusted slightly to fit in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and it can be used to devastating effect.

In the comic books, he targeted Carol Danvers when she was Ms. Marvel, rather than in her Captain Marvel form, but that shouldn’t stop Marvel Studios from putting him up against Captain Marvel in her movie.

The interesting thing about the Puppet Master is that he could potentially bring other superhuman characters along with him, as he likes to use them in his plans by controlling them to do his bidding (particularly female superhumans, who he likes to dominate). He put the likes of Dusk, Tigra, Silverclaw, Stature and Araña up against Danvers, for example – and that would be awesome to see on screen.

Now let’s move on to a character who is best known as a Captain America villain.

M.O.D.O.K.

M.O.D.O.K. is a character we have stated that we don’t really want to see in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but we’re slowly warming to the idea. As a Captain America villain, he might be a bad idea, as there are countless better options but, with Carol Danvers having a weaker rogues gallery, he might actually make a Captain Marvel movie more interesting.

He is George Tarleton - a man subjected to mutagenic process that gave him superhuman intelligence, perfect memory, and the ability to solve abstract mathematical problems nearly instantaneously. He can also calculate the mathematical probability of any given event occurring to the extent that he is essentially precognitive. He has a huge head as a result, which means he gets around in a strange floating device that offers him various offensive capabilities.

He might be a bit silly, but he would add a recognizable face to a Captain Marvel movie that might otherwise be lacking in them. He could cause Captain Marvel a few problems – both mentally and physically – and we’d welcome him appearing in her solo outing.

This next “villain” idea is very different from the others on this list.

Team Iron Man

Okay, this one’s a little bit far-fetched – we realize that – but, given that Captain Marvel will be one of the first new superheroes to appear since the events of Captain America: Civil War (Doctor Strange will be the first, but he tends to operate a bit more discreetly), what if Team Iron Man were to be the antagonists in her movie?

In the comic books, Carol Danvers uses her powers for good quite openly. In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, now that the Sokovia Accords are in place, Tony Stark, his team, and the government might take umbrage to that and try to stop her with the intention of forcing her to register as a superhero.

If she were presented as being able to fend off Iron Man’s entire team, it would really establish her as a big player in the MCU, and she could become an incredibly powerful member of the Avengers going forward as a result.

Ready for another female villain? Let’s move on.

Deathbird

As we’ve already touched upon in this article, female villains are conspicuous by their absence in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, so we’d definitely welcome more. On that note, Deathbird could very well be an extremely interesting addition to the franchise. Although she’s generally considered to be an X-Men villain (which might actually make her ineligible for a Marvel Studios movie), she has fought Carol Danvers on several occasions.

She is Cal’syee Neramani – a member of a segment of the extraterrestrial Shi’ar race that possesses talon-tipped wings – and, when she came to Earth, she worked for A.I.M. (who already exist in the MCU) and fought against Danvers in her Ms. Marvel guise.

Possessing superhuman strength and physical attributes, she’s a more than adequate opponent for Danvers – and having her go up against the heroine in her Captain Marvel solo movie would be pretty cool.

Now for an individual who is unlike any of the other solo villains on this list.

Grace Valentine

Grace Valentine would be an interesting female villain to introduce to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as she has no physical powers of her own and relies solely on her brilliant mind.

She is a businesswoman who grew to hate Carol Danvers because, after trying to promote her cellphone application via an article in the New York Beat magazine, she was dismayed to discover that it had been gazumped in favor of a piece promoting the inspirational heroics of Danvers in her Captain Marvel form.

During a celebration in Times Square, in which mayor J. Jonah Jameson was to award Danvers the keys to New York, Valentine used her hacking skills to control a fleet of military drones to attack the hero (and the civilians who attempted to defend her), while also hacking into the city’s billboards to display hate propaganda about her. It would be a very intriguing concept to take to the big screen.

Now we’ll move on to the first of three alien races who could be the villains in Captain Marvel’s movie.

The Brood

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is expanding rapidly, and more and more alien species will appear in the coming movies – so there’s no reason why the dangerous Brood can’t be introduced in time for the Captain Marvel movie.

The Brood are a race of insectoid, parasitic, extraterrestrial beings who mindlessly follow their queen around the universe, with the sole aim of infecting other species with their eggs. They have fought Carol Danvers in her various forms in the comics – and they could very well do so in the MCU.

Given that the Captain Marvel movie comes after the first Avengers: Infinity War movie, the Avengers could be incapacitated, leaving Danvers as Earth’s first line of defense. Not only could she fight the Brood, but their arrival could trigger the arrival of the Guardians of the Galaxy on Earth, with the intention of helping Danvers fend them off before joining the fight against Thanos in the second Infinity War offering.

Time for another alien race now – one that already exists in the MCU – so let’s continue.

The Kree

The Kree are already an established presence in the Marvel Cinematic Universe – they’ve been a major part of the various plots of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and the main villain of Guardians of the Galaxy, Ronan, was a member of the species.

Given that Carol Danvers’ Captain Marvel gets her powers from a Kree source – a Kree device exploded in her vicinity, granting her various abilities – there’s every chance they could be drawn to Earth (not for the first time) in order to see what she’s all about. That would, of course, result in a battle.

The likes of Yon-Rogg – a Kree military commander who has fought Danvers in the comic books – could be introduced if this happened, which would be cool. It could also trigger things like the arrival of the Guardians of the Galaxy on Earth – something everyone’s looking forward to.

Now we’ll move on to someone who already exists in the MCU, who you might not be expecting in this movie.

Thanos

You might think that Thanos’ appearances in the Marvel Cinematic Universe will come exclusively in the Avengers: Infinity War movies from this point on, but why should that be the case? Sure, he’s not going to be in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, but there’s no reason he couldn’t actually be the villain in Captain Marvel.

Carol Danvers’ solo movie comes in between the two Infinity War offerings and, given that Thanos is likely to have already taken out a team of Avengers by that point, someone will have to step in to confront him.

Step forward Captain Marvel. Perhaps she could use her powers to keep the Mad Titan busy while Earth waits for more backup – perhaps in the form of a second team of Avengers or the Guardians of the Galaxy – displaying her own might and establishing herself as a key player going forward in the MCU in the process.

Now on to our final entry – another alien race.

The Skrulls

It would be truly great to see the Skrulls in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While that may be difficult due to rights issues (it’s actually kind of unclear which movie studio they lie with), a Captain Marvel movie would be a great place to introduce them if it turns out to be a realistic possibility.

Carol Danvers has fought with the shapeshifting alien race on numerous occasions in her various forms in the comic books – and having her as the first to discover their attempts at infiltrating the Earth using their powers of disguise would be a great way to introduce the character.

The arrival of the Skrulls on Earth in the MCU would be a great way to kick off a potential Secret Invasion movie arc in Phase Four – or even a potential Kree/Skrull War in the franchise. And both of those stories would be amazing on the big screen.

And that’s that, folks! Thanks for reading and we hope you enjoyed this article!
