Madame Web was released in theaters over Valentine’s Day in February. It was met with very poor reviews and lost to Bob Marley: One Love on its opening weekend at the box office. It didn’t get much better from there as the film barely made it past the $100 million mark worldwide. Given its $80 million budget (before marketing), this one is going to go down as a big loss for Sony. Even the very poorly reviewed Morbius, which found itself on the wrong end of many jokes in 2022, made significantly more money.
Be that as it may, now more viewers will have the chance to weigh in on the film themselves. The cast is led by Dakota Johnson (Fifty Shades of Grey), with S.J. Clarkson (Jessica Jones) in the director’s chair. Sydney Sweeney (Anyone But You), Isabela Merced (Transformers: Age of Extinction), Celeste O’Connor (Freaky), Tahar Rahim (Napoleon), Mike Epps (The Hangover), Emma Roberts (Scream Queens) and Adam Scott (Parks and Recreation) also star.
Here is the synopsis for Madame Web.
“In a switch from the typical genre, Madame Web tells the standalone origin story of one of Marvel publishing’s most enigmatic heroines. The suspense-driven thriller stars Dakota Johnson as Cassandra Webb, a paramedic in Manhattan who develops the power to see the future… and realizes she can use that insight to change it. Forced to confront revelations about her past, she forges a relationship with three young women bound for powerful destinies…if they can all survive a deadly present.”
The big question now is what Sony will do with these Spider-Man spin-offs in the future. They currently have Kraven the Hunter set to hit theaters in December. They also have Venom 3 set to arrive later this year as well. Beyond that, other films have entered development over the years. Whether or not the disappointing results for Madame Web and Morbius cause them to pivot remains to be seen.
Madame Web is currently available on VOD and Blu-ray.
