The Super Mario Galaxy Movie - Universal Pictures

The first trailer for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is here. Nintendo and Universal Pictures have once again partnered for a sequel to 2023’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Once again produced by animation house Illumination, the follow-up is set to take Mario, Luigi and the gang to space. Check it out for yourself below.

This is very much a teaser trailer, just setting the stage for the sequel. We see Mario and Luigi, who are still holding Bowser captive. He’s still small and he’s helpless. Things get bigger from there as Peach and Toad blast off into space. We see various worlds across the galaxy. There are glimpses of Mario and Luigi riding motorcycles across a vast desert. We meet Bowser Jr., who is dead set on freeing his father. We’re also introduced to Princess Rosalina, who was a major character introduced in the Super Mario Galaxy video game.

2023’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie was a massive hit. It took in more than $1.3 billion at the global box office, becoming one of the biggest animated movies of all time. Nintendo and Universal were quick to announce a sequel. Plot details for the sequel have yet to be fully confirmed, but it is based on the 2007 video game, widely hailed as one of the best Mario games ever.

Here is the synopsis for the Super Mario Galaxy video game.

“Mario meets Rosalina in this star-studded adventure. In the Super Mario Galaxy game, Mario must rescue Princess Peach and recover the stolen Power Stars from Bowser.”

Returning cast members include Mario (Chris Pratt), Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy), Luigi (Charlie Day), Bowser (Jack Black), Toad (Keegan-Michael Key) and Kamek (Kevin Michael Richardson). Newcomers include Captain Marvel star Brie Larson as Princess Rosalina, as well as Oppenheimer star Benny Safdie as Bowser Jr.

Nintendo is fully committing to turning many of its most popular video game franchises into movies. Aside from Mario, production recently began on the live-action The Legend of Zelda movie. It’s being directed by Wes Ball (Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes) and is set to arrive in 2027. There were also rumors of a possible Donkey Kong spin-off, as Seth Rogen voiced the character in the first Mario movie. That has yet to be confirmed though.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie hits theaters on April 3, 2026.
