At long last, The Batman Part II is underway. Director Matt Reeves has confirmed via a series of posts on social media that production has begun on the long-awaited sequel. Filming is expected to begin any day now. The Batman hit theaters in 2022 and was a huge hit. Warner Bros. quickly announced a follow-up but it was hit with a series of setbacks and delays. No longer, as Reeves is back in Gotham City for round two with Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne. They’ve got some company.

The director shared several social media posts confirming various cast members. As promised, the sequel will be a Marvel reunion between Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow) and Sebastian Stan (Thunderbolts), as both actors are taking part in the DC sequel. Brian Tyree Henry (Eternals) is also playing an undisclolsed part.

Stan is confirmed to be playing Harvey Dent, the man who becomes Two-Face. Reeves also confirmed that Charles Dance (Game of Thrones) is part of the cast, believed to be playing Harvey Dent’s father. Johansson’s role remains under wraps.

Reeves further confirmed that Sebastian Koch (Homeland) has joined the cast in an undisclosed role. Other returning cast members include Andy Serkis (Alfred Pennyworth), Jeffrey Wright (Jim Gordon), Colin Ferrell (The Penguin), Jayme Lawson (Bella Real) and Gil Perez-Abraham (Officer Martinez). Cristin Milioti will not reprise her role as Sofia Falcone from The Penguin. Zoe Kravitz has also not been confirmed to return as Catwoman.

“[The Batman Part II will be] a challenge, like everything else,” Stan recently said in an interview with Deadline. “I feel like it’s a really ambitious movie, and I think if we do it all right — and obviously I’m so excited about Matt Reeves [directing] because he’s been one of my favorites for a long, long time — I really think it’s going to blow people away. It’s going to surprise a lot of people, I think, too.

Plot details for the sequel are currently being kept under wraps. Reeves has however confirmed via some behind-the-scenes photos that it will take place during winter. This will mark a change in tone from the first movie. The Batman was a big hit, taking in $772 million at the box office. It was also a major critical success. That’s a big reason why WB was patient with Reeves in getting the sequel going.

Meanwhile, James Gunn and Peter Safran are continuing to build out the new DC Universe at DC Studios. However, Robert Pattinson will not be the Batman of the new DCU. Reeves’ universe will remain separate. A new actor is expected to debut as a different version of the Caped Crusader in a movie titled The Brave and the Bold.

The Batman Part II hits theaters on October 1, 2027.
