Spawn Is Coming To 4K, Watch The Trailer Right Now

Spawn (1997) - Arrow Video

One of the most infamous comic book movies of the ‘90s is getting a serious upgrade. Spawn is coming to 4K Ultra HD next month thanks to the folks at Arrow Video. Based on the hit Image Comics series created by Todd McFarlane, the original movie hit theaters in 1997. Though not well regarded in its day, it’s becoming something of a cult favorite. Now, you can see it in crisp HD with lots of special features. Get a glimpse at the 4K upgrade with the new trailer below. Check it out for yourself.

Arrow’s 4K version of Spawn will be available in Europe, as well as the U.S. and Canada. The 4K version retails for $35, while the Blu-ray goes for $28. We’ve also got the cover art for the new release for you to check out below. You can pre-order a copy right now from ArrowVideo.com

Spawn was directed by Mark A.Z. Dippé, with Michael Jai White (The Dark Knight) starring in the lead role as Al Simmons. It was produced by New Line Cinema just several years after Spawn became a breakthrough cultural hit for Image during the comic book boom in the ‘90s. Unfortunately, thanks to some spotty visual effects and Hollywood’s difficulty knowing how to sell superhero movies to the masses, it was a flop in its day. It made just $88 million at the box office against a $45 million budget.

Here is the synopsis for Spawn.

“Al Simmons (Michael Jai White) is a top-tier Black Ops agent, ruthlessly efficient and fiercely loyal-until he’s doublecrossed and executed by his commanding officer, Jason Wynn (Martin Sheen). But Simmons is resurrected by the devil Malebolgia and becomes Spawn, a demonic antihero with terrifying powers. Caught between Earth and the Underworld, Spawn is determined to exact bloody revenge on Wynn, and must choose to serve his new infernal masters or fight for the salvation of his immortal soul.”

Meanwhile, McFarlane has been working very hard in recent years to get a new Spawn movie reboot off the ground. McFarlane recently revealed they’re talking to A-list directors about the project. Even so, it has languished in development for the better part of a decade at this point. McFarlane hoped to make it R rated and, at one point, he hoped to direct it himself. Blumhouse Productions has been involved since 2018.

For now, it’s unclear when it will see the light of day. So this new 4K upgrade of the original will have to do in the meantime. Below, you can see a full list of bonus features packed into the forthcoming Arrow Video release.
