Fear not, Sonic fans as the super fast SEGA hero is coming back. After the success of Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Paramount has confirmed a sequel is on the way. Sonic the Hedgehog 4 has not only been confirmed, but it already has a release date. Set your calendars for March 19, 2027.
Paramount is set to release Sonic 4 just over two years after the release of the third film. It is believed that Jeff Fowler, who directed all three prior films, will be back at the helm. It’s unclear who among the cast will return. Specifically, it’s unclear if Jim Carrey will be back once more as Dr. Robotnik, as the actor has flirted with retirement in recent years. Plot details are left under wraps, but it’s believed that more characters from the Sonic universe will enter the fold. Sonic 3 introduced Keanu Reeves as Shadow the Hedgehog, for example.
This franchise has been very successful for Paramount. To date, the Sonic films have earned $1.13 billion at the global box office. Sonic 3 is the highest-grossing entry, with $423 million and counting, as of this writing. It overtook Sonic 2, which made just over $400 million in 2022. The first film was released in 2020 just before the pandemic shut down theaters around the world. Even so, it became a big success.
“I am enjoying a few weeks of respite from all the craziness. December was obviously a blur with the promotion and the release, and then once all the dust settles, it’ll be time to figure out next steps and start to have those conversations [about Sonic 4],” Fowler recently said to Screen Rant, “It’s so exciting to see the enthusiasm, the anticipation, all be there for what’s next, because it’s really challenging to keep these movies feeling fresh and have the stories feel fresh, and keep the momentum. So that’s the goal above everything.”
Here is the synopsis for Sonic the Hedgehog 3.
“Sonic the Hedgehog returns to the big screen this holiday season in his most thrilling adventure yet. Sonic, Knuckles, and Tails reunite against a powerful new adversary, Shadow, a mysterious villain with powers unlike anything they have faced before. With their abilities outmatched in every way, Team Sonic must seek out an unlikely alliance in hopes of stopping Shadow and protecting the planet.”
Whether or not Paramount has more in store remains uncertain. The studio released the Knuckled TV show between the second and third films. It’s possible we could get another spin-off on Paramount+ between now and the fourth film. Whether that be Knuckles season 2 or something else entirely, we can only speculate.
The cast also includes Ben Schwartz (Sonic), James Marsden (Tom), Tika Sumpter (Maddie), Idris Elba (Knuckles), Colleen O’Shaughnessey (Tails), Natasha Rothwell (Rachel), Shemar Moore (Randall), Adam Pally (Wade) and Lee Majdoub (Agent Stone). Alyla Browne (Maria) and Krysten Ritter (Director Rockwell) joined the ensemble in the third film.
Sonic the Hedgehog 4 hits theaters on March 17, 2027.
