Cryptic Avengers: Doomsday Teaser Shared – What Does It Mean?

Robert Downey Jr. on stage as Doctor Doom at San Diego Comic Con 2024 - Marvel Studios

Avengers: Doomsday is still well over a year away. Be that as it may, directors Joe and Anthony Russo are teasing fans with something. As for what it is, exactly? That remains a mystery but it is related to this movie on the forthcoming arrival of Doctor Doom, aka Victor Von Doom, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Now, it’s just a matter of figuring out what, if anything, this mysterious tease is all about.

Taking to Instagram, the Russo Brothers, who previously directed Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, shared a strange, blurry image. Without any context, it would be just about impossible to relate it to Avengers: Doomsday at all. However, the duo provided the caption, “#DoomsdayIsComing.” Beyond that, fans have been left to speculate amongst themselves. Though the chalk on the board does seem to resemble some of what Reed Richards was doing in Fantastic Four: First Steps.

What we know for sure is that filming is well underway on Doomsday. Production has been taking place in the U.K., with Robert Downey Jr. returning to the MCU for the blockbuster. But Downey won’t be suiting up as Iron Man (at least not that we know of). Rather, he will be the one playing Doctor Doom, which was announced last summer at San Diego Comic Con.

Plot details for the film remain under wrap, but the next Avengers movie features a stacked cast. It includes Marvel actors from the past, present and presumably future. Doomsday will help tee up the ball for Avengers: Secret Wars, which will officially bring the Multiverse Saga to a close. So these will be major events, with Marvel and Disney hoping to replicate the success of Infinity War and Endgame after an uneven several years.

“The fun of an Avengers movie is introducing people to each other and seeing how very different personalities get along,” Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige previously said in an interview with Marvel.com. “In the case of a movie that involves the threat of worlds literally colliding, it’s fun to see them visit each other’s homes. So with the Baxter Building set, let’s say it had four or five people in it at most in the Fantastic Four movie. And it’s got a heck of a lot more people in it [in Doomsday]. It’s a thrill to see that interaction. And it’s surreal for me, who’s been around for 25 years.”

Feige wasn’t willing to divulge much by way of specifics. But he also discussed what it’s like having some of the original X-Men actors coming back. Before heading up the MCU, Feige got his start working on Fox’s X-Men movies. So for him, this is a bit of a full-circle moment.

“It was another dream that we just didn’t think about for many years. Deadpool & Wolverine scratched the surface of that. And now, we’re really delving into it with Doomsday.”

Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters on December 18, 2026. Avengers: Secret Wars will follow on December 17, 2027.
