If it doesn't work the first time, try again, right? This seems to be the case with The Dark Phoenix Saga, a storyline that was adapted (butchered) in Brett Ratner's X-Men: Last Stand. The movie unnecessarily killed main characters and included irrelevant subplots. Aside from that (and the credits scene), Last Stand also failed to usher the X-Men movie universe into the cosmos.
Screen Rant asked producer Hutch Parker about this issue in relation to Dark Phoenix, which we glimpsed in X-Men: Apocalypse. In response, he mentioned a bold new approach, citing the Guardians of the Galaxy.
Could this mean that the X-Men will finally venture into space? If so, this could remove the bad taste left behind by The Last Stand.
That is certainly a possibility. That is certainly a possibility. Yes.
We could see it happening. X-Men: Apocalypse didn't just introduce a very powerful Jean Grey or just tease the Dark Phoenix. It also introduced some interesting, highly evolved, and possibly alien, technology!
In addition to signaling a return to time travel-related stories, Cable’s arrival in next year’s Deadpool 2 brings up another possibility. Since Josh Brolin will portray Cable in at least five movies, we could see a switch in focus from Professor X, Magneto, and Mystique to the Summers family (Cable is the son of Cyclops and a clone of Jean Grey).
This would another positive change, especially since almost all of the core X-Men movies have been about the relationship between Professor X, Magneto, and Mystique (starting with First Class).
