The first trailer for Transformers One has arrived. This is the long-awaited animated feature film from Hasbro and Paramount Pictures. It will be the first theatrically released animated movie in the franchise since the ‘80s. That makes it a big deal. But will this do for Transformers what Into the Spider-Verse did for Spider-Man? Check it out for yourself.
As the trailer reveals, this movie will take us back to the origins of the Transformers. We’re seeing the early days of Cybertron back when Optimus Prime and Megatron were friends. This is far from the versions of these characters that we’re used to, as they are typically sworn enemies. The animation style is very unique and very much the opposite, visually, from what audiences are used to in the live-action movies, such as last year’s Rise of the Beasts. Whether or not that’s something people are excited about remains to be seen.
Here is the synopsis for Transformers One.
“Transformers One is the untold origin story of Optimus Prime and Megatron, better known as sworn enemies, but once were friends bonded like brothers who changed the fate of Cybertron forever.”
Paramount is seemingly trying to do what several other franchises have done with success in recent years. Aside from the Spider-Verse films, last year’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem was a big win for that franchise. At the same time, the studio is also continuing with the live-action films. Recently, it was confirmed that a G.I. Joe/Transformers movie is in the works. Paramount had previously confirmed that a new G.I. Joe movie was being discussed. But what they have in mind is more ambitious.
Elsewhere, Skybound recently relaunched the Transformers comics in a new shared universe with G.I. Joe. Dubbed the Energon Universe, it all kicked off last year in Robert Kirkman’s Void Rivals #1. So it’s been a pretty busy time for the Autobots and Decepticons, all things considered.
Josh Cooley (Toy Story 4) directed the movie. The cast includes Chris Hemsworth (Optimus Prime), Brian Tyree Henry (Megatron), Scarlett Johansson (Elita-1), Keegan-Michael Key (Bumblebee), Laurence Fishburne (Alpha Trion) and Jon Hamm (Sentinel Prime). Steve Buscemi is also on board but the actor’s role has yet to be revealed. Lorenzo di Bonaventura, Tom DeSanto, Don Murphy, Michael Bay, Mark Vahradian and Aaron Dem are on board as producers. Steven Spielberg, Zev Foreman, Olivier Dumont, Brian Oliver, B.J. Farmer and Matt Quigg serve as executive producers.
Transformers One is set to hit theaters on September 20.
