We now know when The Batman Part II will begin filming. Even though the sequel to director Matt Reeves’ DC superhero epic was originally supposed to hit theaters next year, filming won’t even begin until early 2025. This, according to Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Black Panther star Andy Serkis, who plays Alfred Pennyworth in the first film. He will be returning for the sequel and recently revealed what he could at ACE Superhero Comic Con 2024.
While speaking with a crowd at the convention (via Popverse), Serkis gave an update on the sequel. While he admitted that he doesn’t know anything about the story, the actor did confirm that filming will be getting underway early next year. Here’s what he had to say about it.
“Basically, I know nothing about the movie other than that I’ve just found out that we’re probably likely to be starting filming early next year. Therefore, if you do the math, it’ll be a year and a half after that. I know that Matt [Reeves] is working really hard on the script. Matt Reeves being Matt Reeves, the extraordinary filmmaker that he is, I can only assume that it’s going to be another brilliant script, because I thought what he did with that first film was pretty amazing. I loved working with Rob Pattinson, and I really look forward to playing Alfred once more.”
Indeed, Reeves has been working on the script for some time. The filmmaker first confirmed that The Batman 2 was being written in January 2023. There have been several roadblocks along the way, unfortunately. For one, James Gunn and Peter Safran took over as the heads of DC Studios. Warner Bros. is fully rebooting the DC Universe beginning next year with a new Superman movie. Gunn also intends to bring a new version of Batman to the screen in The Brave and the Bold. That has, undoubtedly, complicated matters.
Earlier this year, Warner Bros. delayed The Batman sequel a full year from its October 3, 2025 release date. Assuming the current plan sticks, that means it will be four years between installments of the franchise. If Reeves intends to make a full trilogy, this could be a long haul for the filmmaker and the rest of the cast. Be that as it may, Serkis sounds optimistic about what’s ahead. At the very least, Reeves isn’t being rushed, which can be interpreted as a good thing.
The Batman Part II is currently set to hit theaters on October 2, 2026.
