At long last, we finally have an official plot synopsis for The Batman. As reported by Comicbook.com, Warner Bros. has revealed a synopsis for the film, which stars Robert Pattinson (The Lighthouse, High LIfe) as our new Bruce Wayne. Matt Reeves (War for the Planet of the Apes, Cloverfield) is directing.
Here is the synopsis for The Batman.
“The Batman is an edgy, action-packed thriller that depicts Batman in his early years, struggling to balance rage with righteousness as he investigates a disturbing mystery that has terrorized Gotham. Robert Pattinson delivers a raw, intense portrayal of Batman as a disillusioned, desperate vigilante awakened by the realization that the anger consuming him makes him no better than the ruthless serial killer he’s hunting.”
As one might expect, the description is quite vauge. It won’t even name Riddler as the villain, even tough we’ve seen plenty of Paul Dano as the character in the trailers. We also get some sense of Pattinson’s take on the character, described as “disillusioned, desperate vigilante.” Again, that seems to match what we’ve seen in the footage thus far. Be that as it may, if nothing else, this serves as a reminder that the movie is finally coming, and soon.
The Batman was one of the many movies delayed by the pandemic. After years of being stuck in development, filming had finally gotten underway just months before Hollywood was effecively shut down. There were multiple stops and starts along the way. Plus, Warner Bros. had to delay the movie several times. But it’s finally set to arrive in just a handful of months. It may well be one of the first true blockbusters of 2022, depending on how things pan out.
Jeffrey Wright (No Time to Die, Westworld) as the GCPD’s James Gordon; John Turturro (Transformers, The Plot Against America) as Carmine Falcone; Peter Sarsgaard (The Magnificent Seven, Interrogation) as Gotham D.A. Gil Colson; Jayme Lawson (Farewell Amor) as mayoral candidate Bella Real; with Andy Serkis (Planet of the Apes, Black Panther) as Alfred; and Colin Farrell (The Gentlemen, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them) as Penguin.
Reeves is directing from a screenplay he co-wrote with Peter Craig. Dylan Clark and Reeves are on board as producers. Michael E. Uslan, Walter Hamada, Chantal Nong Vo and Simon Emanuel serve as executive producers.
The Batman is set to hit theaters on March 4, 2022.
