The time has finally arrived, Marvel fans. After several delays and much waiting, Eternals has finally hit theaters. Unlike Black Widow earlier this year, the latest Marvel Cinematic Universe epic is playing exclusively in theaters. So those who are eager to see this one will need to head to a theater to do so.
Eternals has been in development for several years at Marvel Studios. It was officially announced by the studio’s head Kevin Feige back in 2018. Not long after, Chloe Zhao (The Rider) was brought on board to direct. As fate would have it, Zhao would go on to win Best Director for her work on Nomadland at the Academy Awards. The film also won Best Picture. That set a new level of expectation for the latest Phase 4 MCU flick.
Here is the synopsis for Marvel’s Eternals.
Marvel Studios’ Eternals features an exciting new team of Super Heroes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, ancient aliens who have been living on Earth in secret for thousands of years. Following the events of Avengers: Endgame, an unexpected tragedy forces them out of the shadows to reunite against mankind’s most ancient enemy, the Deviants.
Critics have been very mixed on Eternals so far. As of this writing, it holds a 51 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It is the first time a Marvel Studios movie has fallen below the 60 percent threshold, making it “Rotten.” But it’s not so simple as all of that. The real test will be what fans think, and how the reviews do (or don’t) affect the box office returns. Previously, Thor: The Dark World held the mantle as the MCU’s worst-reviewed movie.
The legendary Jack Kirby created the heroes in the pages of Marvel Comics. They first debuted in Eternals #1 in 1976. Despite the longevity they’ve enjoyed, the characters are not well known in the mainstream. Marvel has done well with obscure characters in the past though, with Guardians of the Galaxy serving as the best example. That is now one of Marvel’s most lucrative and beloved franchises overall.
The impressive ensemble cast includes Angelina Jolie, Gemma Chan, Richard Madden, Kumail Nanjiani, Lauren Ridloff, Brian Tyree Henry, Salma Hayek, Lia McHugh, Don Lee and Kit Harrington.
