Mortal Kombat 2 Release Date Announced For 2025

Mortal Kombat 2 is headed to a theater near you in 2025. Warner Bros. has announced that the sequel to 2021’s live-action video game movie will arrive on October 24, 2025. That puts it on the big screen just in time for the Halloween season. Also of importance, it will be screening in IMAX as well. Mark your calendars and plan accordingly.

Plot details remain under wraps for the sequel to 2021’s Mortal Kombat. Simon McQuoid is returning to the director’s chair. The follow-up was officially announced in January 2022, with Moon Knight writer Jeremy Slater coming on board to pen the script. One thing we do know is that the sequel will bring fan-favorite Johnny Cage into the fold. Karl Urban (Dredd, The Boys) is set to portray the martial artist movie star.

The cast also includes Lewis Tan (Cole Young), Adeline Rudolph (Kitana), Jessica McNamee (Sonya Blade), Josh Lawson (Kano), Tadanobu Asano (Raiden), Mehcad Brooks (Jax), Ludi Lin (Liu Kang), Damon Herriman (Kabal), Tati Gabrielle (Jade), Martyn Ford (Shao Kahn), Max Huang (Kung Lao), Ana Thu Nguyen (Sindel), Chin Han (Shang Tsung), Joe Taslim (Sub-Zero) and Hiroyuki Sanada (Scorpion). Speaking in 2022, Slater explained that Mortal Kombat 2 is going to try and improve upon its predecessor in key ways.

“We’re really looking at this as a chance to take everything that worked in the first one and do it even better and give the audience even more, and make something that is just incredibly satisfying, and really exciting, and unpredictable.”

2021’s Mortal Kombat did somewhat modest business at the box office, taking in $83 million worldwide against a $55 million budget. However, the R-rated film was hampered by the pandemic, as it debuted on HBO Max the same day it hit theaters. The film was, at the time, the most-watched premiere ever on the streaming service. Those numbers were encouraging enough for Warner Bros. to move forward with a sequel.

Elsewhere in the franchise, Mortal Kombat 1 was released last year for console and PC. The game provided a new jumping-on point for the long running series. Since the last movie hit theaters, we’ve also had several animated features in the Mortal Kombat Legends series, such as Scorpion’s Revenge and Snow Blind.

Look for Mortal Kombat 2 in theaters on October 24, 2025.
