Marvel’s Thunderbolts Movie Loses Steven Yeun

Marvel’s Thunderbolts movie has lost a key cast member. Steven Yeun (The Walking Dead, Invincible) has dropped out of the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe film. The actor was cast in the team-up film early last year. There is no word yet on who is going to replace Yeun but filming is believed to be taking place sometime in the first half of this year. So a replacement could be revealed sooner rather than later.

Jake Schreier (Paper Towns) is on board to direct Thunderbolts. Lee Sung Jin (Beef) penned the screenplay. The film is set to close out Phase 5 of the MCU. The project has been delayed several times due to the strikes and ongoing changes behind the scenes at Marvel Studios. It was believed that Yeun would be playing the character Sentry. First introduced to Marvel Comics in 2000, Sentry is the alter ego of Robert Reynolds. He is extremely powerful but also extremely unstable.

‘I Wanna do a Marvel movie’

“I think for me, time passing and things shifting kind of pulled me out of it,” Yeun said to Variety about dropping out of the film. “But Jake [Schreier], I know, is going to do an incredible job.” Yeun also added, “It took a lot of drafts on email to make sure that I conveyed the sincerity of how sorry I was to have to back out.” The actor also added, “I wanna do a Marvel movie.” So we may see Yeun in the MCU eventually, it’s just not going to be in this movie. As for what that might be? The actor has some ideas but is worried he may have angered the studio.

“I think it’s too early to say that. I probably pissed off too many people leaving, so I’m just gonna say, ‘Thank you for having me.’ I have some ideas. But I heard if you put it out there, you’ll never get it, so I’ll keep it close to my chest.”

No synopsis for the film has been released but Thunderbolts is sort of similar to DC’s Suicide Squad in the comics. To that end, some former MCU bad guys will be teaming up in the failm. The cast includes David Harbour (Red Guardian), Hannah John-Kamen (Ghost), Julia Louis-Dreyfus (Valentina Allegra de la Fontaine), Sebastian Stan (Winter Soldier), Wyatt Russell (John Walker), Olga Kurylenko (Taskmaster) and Florence Pugh (Yelena Belova).

Thunderbolts is currently set to hit theaters on July 25, 2025.
