The first trailer for Marvel’s Thunderbolts is here. With this, Phase 5 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe comes to close. It does so by bringing together a new team. But unlike The Avengers, these are not a bunch of heroes. Rather, it’s a bunch of people who operate in the gray coming together for a dangerous mission. What is that mission, exactly? Watch the trailer and see for yourself.
It’s a big, long trailer. As we can see, Florence Pugh leads the way as Yelena Belova. Other familiar faces include Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier, David Harbour as Red Guardian, Wyatt Russell as John Walker, Olga Kurylenko as Taskmaster, Hannah John-Kamen as Ghost and Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Valentina Allegra de Fontaine. The trailer is full of action. Naturally, this group is a little reluctant to join forces. But with a large threat – namely Sentry – looming, they do what they must. We’ve also got a new poster for the film, which you can check out below.
What’s really interesting is that Marvel Studios has yet to reveal an official synopsis for the film. What secrets are they hiding? Jake Schreier is in the director’s chair for this one, which has been in the works for quite some time. Lewis Pullman and Geraldine Viswanathan also star.
Thunderbolts was delayed several times. Partly because of last year’s WGA and SAG strikes. Also in part because the filmmaking team kept shifting.
“In this film, she certainly takes advantage of people we’ve come to think of as underdogs and uses that to her advantage,” Julia Louis-Dreyfus previously said of her work as Valentina Allegra de Fontaine in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. “It was fun for me to play a hyper-manipulative person who is about four steps ahead of everyone in the piece, and that was cool. And I did my share of kicking ass.”
Even though this is billed as the end of Phase 5 of the MCU, the Multiverse Saga is soldiering on. Phase 6 of the MCU will also be all about the multiverse, which has been the driving force in the aftermath of Avengers: Endgame. The whole thing will conclude with a new two-part Avengers saga. First up will be Avengers: Doomsday in 2026. That will be followed by Avengers: Secret Wars in 2027, which will bring the Multiverse Saga to a close. What lies beyond that? We’ll have to wait and see.
Thunderbolts hits theaters on May 2, 2025.
