The Critics' Choice Awards might not be as reputable as the big dogs (Oscars and Golden Globes), but they’re considered pretty prestigious, as they are handed out by the Broadcast Film Critics Association. The 22nd Critics' Choice Awards took place on Sunday, December 11, 2016, with Deadpool star T.J. Miller returning as host. While the Damien Chazelle musical La La Land (starring Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone) dominated the event with eight wins, the superhero genre bagged three awards.
Deadpool, the surprise R-rated superhero blockbuster, won the Critics' Choice Award For Best Comedy, beating movies like Central Intelligence, Don't Think Twice, Hail, Caesar!, The Edge of Seventeen, and The Nice Guys. The Tim Miller flick was also nominated in the Best Action Movie category – along with Captain America: Civil War, Doctor Strange, and Jason Bourne - but lost to Mel Gibson's Hacksaw Ridge.
It was previously announced that Ryan Reynolds would accept the Entertainer of the Year award at the event, but that wasn't the only award he received. The Canadian actor also bagged the Critics' Choice Award for Best Actor in a Comedy Movie for his performance as the Merc with a Mouth. The other nominees in the category were Ryan Gosling for The Nice Guys, Dwayne Johnson for Central Intelligence, Hugh Grant for Florence Foster Jenkins, and Viggo Mortensen for Captain Fantastic.
Reynolds was also a contender for Best Actor in an Action Movie, along with Benedict Cumberbatch for Doctor Strange, Chris Evans for Captain America: Civil War, and Matt Damon for Jason Bourne, but Hacksaw Ridge's Andrew Garfield was named the winner.
The only nomination that Suicide Squad received was earned by Margot Robbie in the Best Actress in an Action Movie category for her portrayal of Harley Quinn. The Aussie actress won the award, over Gal Gadot for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Scarlett Johansson for Captain America: Civil War, and Tilda Swinton for Doctor Strange.
Robbie's Suicide Squad co-star Viola Davis took home the Critics' Choice Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance as Rose Maxson in Denzel Washington's Fences. She also received the first-ever #SeeHer award.
