Milly Alcock’s Supergirl Is A Major Part Of The New DC Universe

Milly Alcock as Supergirl

Milly Alcock’s Supergirl isn’t just getting a solo movie this summer; she’s going to be a huge part of the new DC Universe going forward. Alcock appeared briefly in last summer’s Superman, directed by DC Studios co-head James Gunn. Now, his DC Studios partner Peter Safran has revealed that Alcock will have much more to do going forward.

In a recent profile piece on Alcock for Variety, Safran revealed that Alcock has joined the cast of next year’s Man of Tomorrow, Gunn’s sequel to Superman. It’s currently filming for a summer 2027 release. What’s more, Safran made it clear that Alcock will be a big part of the new DCU beyond these movies. That is, assuming things continue to go to Warner Bros.’ liking.

“She’s a major part of what we’re doing,’” Safran said.

Supergirl has released several trailers in the lead up to its release next month. It’s one of two movies being released by DC and Warner Bros. in theaters this year alongside Clayface, which is a full-on, R-rated horror movie. Based on Safran’s comments, it sounds like the brass at Warner Bros. have confidence in what Alcock has done with the role thus far. Supergirl director Greg Gillespe echoed that, saying the following.

“She blew me away. This is such a huge project for any actor, but somebody at her age, to have to step in — it’s a four-and-a-half-month shoot.”

As of right now, much is unknown about the future of the DCU. Paramount is in the midst of trying to buy Warner Bros. If that deal gets approved, the new regime will undoubtedly have ideas about what to do with the franchise. Currently, Gunn and Safran have plans for several more movies. They also have shows like Lanterns coming down the pipeline. However, no live-action movies have been given the green light or have begun filming outside of Man of Tomorrow. They appear to be taking a wait-and-see approach.

Here is the synopsis for Supergirl.

“When an unexpected and ruthless adversary strikes too close to home, Kara Zor-El, aka Supergirl, reluctantly joins forces with an unlikely companion on an epic, interstellar journey of vengeance and justice.”

“What Kara was going through that I was going through is she’s someone who has been at war with themselves. And I think that’s a very universal feeling — especially for women,” Alcock added in the interview. “So it’s been a really surprising journey. I never thought taking on a superhero film would do that. But it has! And what a beautiful thing.”

Supergirl hits theaters on June 26.
