2028 could prove to be a very big year for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Disney has officially announced that a mystery Marvel Studios movie will hit theaters on December 15, 2028. The news was reported by Variety, with the outlet noting that we could be getting four MCU movies in 2028, if nothing changes between now and then.
Earlier this year, Marvel Studios revealed they had three mystery movies set to arrive in 2028. The dates set aside at that time were February 18, 2028, May 5, 2028 and November 10, 2028. None of those movies are the newly announced movie have been revealed, so far as the titles go. Let the guessing games begin. That said, there are some pretty obvious candidates.
First and foremost, Marvel has the long-awaited X-Men reboot in the works. That seems like a surefire bet. There are also a few sequels that seem very likely, including Doctor Strange 3, Black Panther 3 and Shang-Chi 2. Other potential suitors would be the Blade reboot, which has been delayed several times at this point. There’s also the Armor Wars movie, but that feels like it’s more likely to be scrapped at this stage.
There’s also a strong possibility one of those movies could be something we haven’t heard about at all. What we know for sure is that Avengers: Secret Wars will bring the Multiverse Saga to a close in 2027. So whatever comes our way in 2028 will be getting the next saga under way, whatever shape that takes.
The big question right now is whether all four of these release dates stick. The MCU releasing a movie in November and then another in December seems rather ambitious. It’s also important to point out that Marvel Studios and Disney previously committed to scaling back on quantity, both with the TV shows and the movies.
“We’re slowly going to decrease volume and go to probably about two TV series a year instead of what had become four and reduce our film output from maybe four a year to two, or a maximum of three,” Disney CEO Bob Iger said during an earnings call in May of 2024. “We’re working hard on what that path is.” Iger also said at the time that he feels confident about what Marvel has coming down the pipeline.
“Overall, I feel great about the slate. It’s something that I’ve committed to spending more and more time on. The team is one that I have tremendous confidence in and the IP that we’re mining, including all the sequels that we’re doing, is second to none.”
