Is Marvel’s Deadpool 4 Actually Happening?

Deadpool & Wolverine - Marvel Studios

The future of Deadpool is a little up in the air right now at Marvel Studios. At least officially, anyway. While no formal announcement has been made, it sounds very much like Ryan Reynolds is prioritizing Deadpool 4. Or, if not a fourth solo movie focused on Wade Wilson, another team-up movie like 2024’s Deadpool & Wolverine. Either way, we haven’t seen the last of the Merc with a Mouth, it seems.

According to a recent report from Puck, Reynolds is looking at his future slate in light of the ongoing lawsuit between his wife Blake Lively and It Ends With Us director Justin Baldoni. The report indicates that Reynolds is now focused on the next Deadpool adventure at Marvel Studios, in light of all of the negative attention this lawsuit has brought. Here’s what the report had to say, precisely.

“Sources say Reynolds is also wisely focused on the next Deadpool movie, which will give him a chance to be seen as the public loves him most.”

Reynolds previously confirmed that he’s writing another Deadpool project. However, it wasn’t clear if that was more akin to Deadpool 4, or something more like X-Force that Deadpool would merely be a part of. For the moment, Marvel Studios has yet to confirm anything. Nor has Disney set any sort of release date for the proposed movie. But given that Deadpool & Wolverine made more than $1.3 billion at the box office, they would welcome it with open arms.

“In order for a character who talks like that to work you have to take everything away from him. His skin. His face. He’s covered in scars. He’s bald. He wears the mask out of shame,” Reynolds previously said of the character. “I hijacked the first movie, I used the character to tell a story about shame, then a story about family for the second movie and this movie being about redemption. I think we nailed redemption.”

Marvel Studios is currently focussed on bringing the Multiverse Saga to a close. That includes Spider-Man: Brand New Day and Avengers: Doomsday this year. It’s all building to the grand finale that is Avengers: Secret Wars in 2027. After that? It’s anyone’s guess what the next phase of the MCU will look like. Disney has set aside several 2028 release dates for untitled Marvel movies though

As for what those movies will be? We know the X-Men reboot is firmly in the works. Beyond that, sequels like Doctor Strange 3, Black Panther 3 and Shang-Chi 2 seem like surefire bets. Maybe – just maybe – we can add another Deadpool movie to that list as well.

Deadpool 4 doesn’t currently have a release date but stay tuned.
