Fans had their fingers crossed in hopes that Sony Pictures wouldn’t repeat a past mistake with the second Venom trailer, and everyone will be happy to hear that they didn’t.
Tom Hardy recently announced that a new trailer for Eddie Brock's R-rated solo outing would debut at CinemaCon 2018, and that’s exactly what happened. After the screening at the annual convention of theater owners, the trailer showed up online.
The first Venom trailer took a lot of online heat because it omitted even a brief glimpse of Brock's symbiote alter-ego. However, the new trailer more than makes up for that with enthralling shots of the symbiote as it engulfs its host's head and evolves into the sharp-toothed and white-eyed monster we wanted to see in the last clip. Finally, with its insanely long, slavering tongue on display, it boldly proclaims, "We are Venom."
The CGI looks top-notch, and the trailer as a whole gives us a good idea of what goes on in the movie. A journalist, Hardy’s version of Brock has quite a bit in common with his comic book counterpart as he investigates the Life Foundation. With Carlton Drake (Riz Ahmed) in charge, the organization is harboring a number of symbiotes that were apparently extracted from the wreckage of a crashed aircraft (probably a spacecraft).
Convinced that joining together with a symbiote is the key to our evolution, Drake begins to carry out experiments on humans. When Jenny Slate's Dora Skirth tells Brock that a number of test subjects have been killed in the process, he sneaks into the Life Foundation building and somehow makes contact with the symbiote.
Drake sends his henchmen to recover his property from Brock, but it's too late.
