Todd McFarlane appears to be confident that Tom Hardy will be great as Venom in the anti-hero's upcoming standalone flick. However, he’s curious about how much of the movie’s R rating Sony Pictures will actually exploit.
Venom will kick off production later this month. With that date approaching, we’re betting that Hardy is encouraged that Todd McFarlane, who co-created Venom/Eddie Brock, spoke highly of him in a new interview with ScreenGeek:
It'll be interesting. I've seen some movies of his where he can bring anger and a wide personality to it. To me, I think Tom Hardy's going to be as good as whatever Venom looks like. We all know Tom's going to act. He's going to do a good job.
McFarlane's faith in Hardy doesn't necessarily reflect his faith in the movie itself. He’s raised a few questions about the project that actually echo some fans’ concerns:
So, now, what's Venom gonna look like? It's an R-rated movie, how R are they going to go? To me, that's the question. Are they going to go a "little bit R"? Venom's a monster to me - are they going to make him a monster, or are they going to make him a man? Are they going to humanize him? That's what we gotta find out.
Venom's cast roster also includes Riz Ahmed, Michelle Williams, and Jenny Slate. Ruben Fleischer will be calling the shots, based on a script penned by Scott Rosenberg, Jeff Pinkner, and Kelly Marcel.
