Spider-Man: Homecoming Director Clarifies Sony/Marvel Deal

The surprise announcement that Tom Hardy will star as Eddie Brock in an upcoming Venom movie naturally had fans wondering whether a connection will be made between Sony's shared universe and the MCU. Marvel said that there were no plans to include Venom in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but Sony’s Amy Pascal made some comments that indicated that both Venom and Silver and Black would co-exist with the MCU's Peter Parker.

Of course, this has led to even more confusion, with even Tom Holland saying that he had no idea whether Parker would be involved in any of Sony's movies. So which is it? Are we already seeing signs that Marvel and Sony can't agree on the nature of their own deal?

In March, Amy Pascal said:

You don't have studios deciding to work together to make a film very often. In fact, it may never happen again - after we do the sequel (via Screen Rant).

Basically, nearly everybody interpreted this to mean that after the Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel, the MCU will retire Peter Parker.

But then, Tom Holland recently revealed that plans were being made for a Spider-Man trilogy (via Collider).

So, we have even more confusion.

Spider-Man: Homecoming director Jon Watts addressed all of this by saying that it was likely that Amy Pascal was referring not to the fact that the end of the deal was so close, but rather to the fact that the deal between the major studios was unprecedented:

I don't think she [Amy Pascal] meant that in an apocalyptic way. I think she was just trying to say what an unprecedented deal [it was] that Marvel and Sony teamed up (via Comic Book).

Again, there’s even more confusion.

It’s clear that Spider-Man: Homecoming is a product of both Marvel and Sony. But, while they look good, the trailers and clips have revealed almost all of the film’s major plot-points.

Spider-Man: Homecoming will be released in the US on the 7th of July.
