Well before production began for the Venom movie, Sony’s Amy Pascal confused everyone – even Kevin Feige – when she revealed that the Venom movie would share a reality with other Marvel Cinematic Universe characters, but it wouldn’t feature any of the characters who inhabited the shared universe.
Fans debated about whether Pascal didn't know what she was talking about or, based on Feige’s priceless reaction, had let slip a major secret. But which was it? Shooting got underway for the movie, but we’ve heard nothing since about whether it will be part of the MCU. There’s certainly been no news about a Spider-Man appearance or cameo.
It now looks as though Pascal did know what she was talking about. A recent rumor that Tom Holland was seen on the Venom set over a couple of days appears to indicate that Pascal really did know what she was talking about. The conclusion was that Holland would at least contribute a cameo. Collider’s Jon Schnepp confirmed that the actor filmed several scenes, but as Peter Parker rather than Spider-Man.
Tom Holland was on set filming scenes on Venom for at least two days as Peter Parker. Okay, so I'm not saying that Spider-Man is in the film. When I say that Tom Holland's Spider-Man is in the film, I'm saying that Peter Parker is in the film. This is a cameo. I don't know what it is. I didn't read the script (via CBM).
What does that mean? Are Venom's origins somehow connected to Spider-Man? For the moment, we have no answer.
One thing is certain: Venom will be set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe! All that remains is for us to understand what Pascal meant when she referenced the reality of the MCU.
Venom will be released on October 5, 2018.
