Avengers: Infinity War Directors on Thanos, Pain, and Sacrifice!

Russo Brothers talk about Thanos, pain and sacrifices in Avengers: Infinity War!

After viewing the first Avengers: Infinity War trailer, one might think that Thanos is just another brute out to subdue Earth, but the film’s directors insist that there's more to him than meets the eye.

Joe and Anthony Russo recently attended a fan Q & A session at Sina Weibo to promote their latest Marvel Cinematic Universe installment. The questions included one concerning Thor and Winter Soldier, and another about which character the co-directors were most excited about. In response, Anthony named Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and Joe opted for the Mad Titan (Josh Brolin).

Joe explained that Thanos is a complex and captivating character, and added that some may see Avengers: Infinity War as Thanos' movie:

I'm most excited for the audience to learn about him. I think he's a very interesting and complex villain. That's why I like him, and that's why I'm excited for the audience to learn about him. I think his motivations, albeit psychotic, are compelling. And I think that this, in a lot of ways, is his movie. So it's going to be very interesting to see how people respond to Thanos in the film.

Joe also shed some light on the stakes involved in the May 4, 2018 release. Claiming that they’re fans of good storytelling, he added:

And for us, the best stories have stakes – characters have to make sacrifices. To really, really feel the true emotion and the hero's journey, they have to go through trials, and those trials could cost them something. So, for us, it's very important that the heroes feel pain and that they make sacrifices, because I think that not only is it great storytelling, but it’s also inspiring, and I think we need a lot of inspiration in this world right now.

The director concluded with a promise that they’re committed to providing the audience with "the best story possible". Check out the Q & A session below, along with a new Avengers: Infinity War photo released by USA Today!
