How Long Is James Gunn’s Superman Movie? We Have An Answer

Superman (David Corenswet) - Warner Bros.

We now know precisely how long James Gunn’s new Superman movie is. Gunn, who also serves as the co-head of DC Studios at Warner Bros. alongside Peter Safran, is relaunching the entire DC Universe. While that technically started with the release of the animated Creature Commandos, it begins more earnestly with Superman this summer.

Theater chains recently began listing the runtime for Superman, listing it at 2 hours and 9 minutes. When a fan asked Gunn on Threads if this was accurate, the Guardians of the Galaxy filmmaker responded with definitive confirmation. “Yes. Inclusive of credits/post credits the runtime is 2 hours 9 minutes.” So there we have it. For those who plan on sitting through the credits, plan on 129 minutes. While Gunn didn’t confirm anything, it does sound like a post-credits scene might be in the cards.

In terms of comparisons, Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel clocks in at 2 hours and 23 minutes. Meanwhile, Matt Reeves’ The Batman was a whopping 2 hours and 56 minutes. Superman is actually playing closer, in terms of runtime, to Black Adam, which was 2 hours and 5 minutes in length.

The film features David Corenswet as our new Superman/Clark Kent. He’ll be joined by Rachel Brosnahan (The Amateur ) as Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult (X-Men: Days of Future Past) as Lex Luthor. Plot details have largely been kept under wraps but many other characters from the wider DC Universe will be introduced, including Mister Terrific, Hawkgirl and Guy Gardner’s Green Lantern.

Here is the synopsis for Superman.

Superman, DC Studios’ first feature film to hit the big screen, is set to soar into theaters worldwide this summer from Warner Bros. Pictures. In his signature style, James Gunn takes on the original superhero in the newly imagined DC universe with a singular blend of epic action, humor and heart, delivering a Superman who’s driven by compassion and an inherent belief in the goodness of humankind.”

Gunn and Safran have big plans for the DCU in the coming years. In 2026, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow hits theaters, with Clayface also due to arrive in September of next year. Other movies at various stages of development include The Authority, Swamp Thing, The Brave and the Bold, and Teen Titans. TV shows such as Lanterns, Waller and Booster Gold are also in the works. Peacemaker season 2 will also arrive on HBO Max later this year. How far along we get into Gunn and Safran’s plan may well depend on how well this movie performs.

The cast also includes Edi Gathegi (For All Mankind), Anthony Carrigan (Gotham), Nathan Fillion (The Suicide Squad), Isabela Merced (Alien: Romulus), Skyler Gisondo (Booksmart), Sara Sampaio (At Midnight), María Gabriela de Faría (The Moodys), Wendell Pierce (Selma), Alan Tudyk (Andor), Pruitt Taylor Vince (Bird Box) and Neva Howell (Greedy People).

“Superman” hits theaters on July 11.
