James Gunn has dished some details on Guardians of the Galaxy 4. That is, assuming there is a fourth entry in the franchise. If such a thing does happen down the line, it will likely bring in a different team in front of the screen and behind the scenes.
The reveal was made by Gunn recently on Instagram during a Q&A session with fans. The filmmaker explained that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is probably going to be his last film in the series, in addition to being the last one to feature the current team.
“It’s probably my last one, and the last one with the current team. But you never know!” Gunn said.
Guardians of the Galaxy debuted in 2014 with a team led by Chris Pratt as Star-Lord. The lineup also features Drax, Gamora, Rocket and Groot. Mantis was introduced as a member in the sequel. Prior to the first film, few people outside of hardcore Marvel Comis fans were familiar with the obscure team. Now they are among the most popular characters in the entirety of the Marvel lineup.
That is in no small part thanks to Gunn. The filmmaker wrote and directed both movies so far. He is also on deck to tackle the third entry, which is expected to be part of Marvel’s Phase 5 plans. It originally would have happened much sooner, but Gunn was temporarily fired and took a job directing The Suicide Squad for Warner Bros. He was then re-hired at a later date.
The movies have grossed $1.64 billion combined at the global box office. Not to mention the characters appearing in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.
In any event, it seems Gunn’s time in the MCU could be coming to an end. To that point, when asked during the same Q&A about possibly directing an Avengers movie down the line, Gunn ruled himself out for that as well.
“I haven’t been asked, but I wouldn’t do it if I was,” Gunn said.
Here is the synopsis for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.
“Set to the sonic backdrop of Awesome Mixtape #2, Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 continues the team’s adventures as they traverse the outer reaches of the cosmos. The Guardians must fight to keep their newfound family together as they unravel the mystery of Peter Quill’s true parentage. Old foes become new allies, and characters from the classic comics come to their aid as the Marvel Cinematic Universe continues to expand.”
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 does not yet have a release date set.
