We've known for some time that a Suicide Squad sequel is in the works. The latest update on the project is that it has found a screenwriter.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Adam Cozad is in negotiation with Warner Bros. to pen the script for the upcoming DC Extended Universe installment. Most recently, the writer worked for the studio as co-scribe for last year's The Legend of Tarzan. He also worked on the scripts for Paramount Pictures' 2014 spy thriller Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit and 20th Century Fox's upcoming flick Underwater.
Last month, we came across a shortlist of potential candidates for the Suicide Squad 2 director's chair. The list included Hacksaw Ridge director Mel Gibson, Safe House director Daniel Espinosa, 50/50 director Jonathan Levine, and Zombieland director Ruben Fleischer. Gibson later confirmed that discussions have taken place, but he insisted that it's not "a done deal or anything".
The outlet suggests that Suicide Squad 2 is "a priority" for the studio, and they’re "focusing on nailing down a story". Once a script is completed, the focus is likely to shift to pursuing directors.
David Ayer wrote and directed the original movie, but he won't be involved in the sequel. Instead, he’ll be at the helm for Gotham City Sirens, a Suicide Squad spin-off with Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn as one of its lead characters. Catwoman and Poison Ivy are apparently the other leads.
It was recently reported that Warner Bros. is interested in making R-rated DCEU movies. But whether they would want such a rating for Suicide Squad 2 remains to be seen. At one point, Ayer expressed interest in making it R-rated, but he’s no longer connected with the project.
