After the first Suicide Squad installment was battered by the critics, Warner Bros. decided to have David Ayer direct the Harley Quinn spin-off Gotham City Sirens rather than the sequel. There’s been yet another change in plan for the DCEU, and the studio is now searching for a director. There are a number of names for them to consider, including Daniel Espinosa (Safe House), Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland, Gangster Squad), and Jonathan Levine (Warm Bodies). However, there’s another name on the list of directors that might surprise quite a few fans.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, none other than Mel Gibson is in consideration for this role. It’s surprising because of the director’s previous comments about superhero flicks, specifically Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice:
What did they spend on Batman v Superman that they’re admitting to? And it’s a piece of shit.
Of course, this could just be a rumor, similar to the one about the possibility of Ridley Scott as director of The Batman reboot (and Scott bashed the same movie). But Mel Gibson himself confirmed during a Q & A session for Hacksaw Ridge that he is in talks with Warner Bros. to direct Suicide Squad 2. He also said that he’d only had a first date with the studio to discuss the project (via Batman News).
Of course, Mel Gibson is still an acclaimed director who has demonstrated that his R-rated flicks can make big bucks on much smaller budgets than the one for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Furthermore, the flicks he’s directed have been critically acclaimed. So, is this a good move?
Should Mel Gibson prove his worth once again by directing Suicide Squad 2?
